Stranger Things Star Caleb McLaughlin Wants to Play Static Shock

Caleb McLaughlin still has the final season of Stranger Things ahead of him, but the actor is already looking to the future and has his eyes set on one superhero role.

Speaking during a Q&A session at Heroes Comic Con Belgium 2022 in Brussels recently, McLaughlin was asked if he was interested in any future roles, to which the actor replied that he wants to get into superhero films, with one character in mind.

“What other movie would I like… I want to do a superhero film. I would love to play Static Shock honestly,” McLaughin said (via Screen Rant). “I would want to do something like a superhero, or even something… it doesn’t matter. I’m really open to being any character. I feel like I can play anybody honestly. It really—I feel like how I pick my films is really what speaks to me. Also, I’m also developing other projects myself that will be coming out. Not soon, but soon. But yeah, it really doesn’t matter actually. It’s just whatever project speaks to me and my creativity.”

For McLaughlin, this may be the actor throwing his hat into the ring, as DC did actually announce that a Static Shock film was in development a couple of years ago. However, now much on the project has been announced since, so it’s unclear if the project is even moving forward at this point. Since its announcement, the project was reported to be produced by Michael B. Jordan and written by Randy McKinnon.

Static Shock, the alter ego of Virgil Hawkins, made his debut in the eponymous comic of the same name in 1993 from the now-defunct Milestone Comics, a publisher founded by Black writers and artists looking to create a more inclusive space. He later found larger stardom through the animated series Static Shock on Kids’ WB, in which he was voiced by Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack) and followed the story of the titular teenager transforming into a superhero after being exposed to a strange gas and gaining electromagnetic powers, and eventually made his way into the mainstream DC Comics line in 2008.
