Bullet Train is the latest effort by acclaimed action director David Leitch, who is perhaps best known for his work on Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Like those films, Bullet Train boasts a winning combination of inventive action and quick humor. The sprawling cast of Bullet Train includes Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, and Michael Shannon.
The setup of Bullet Train is relatively simple: a number of assassins find themselves together on the same train. Although their missions appear to be separate, things may not be as unrelated as they seem. Although Brad Pitt's seemingly unlucky character Ladybug is the audience's entry point to the film, Bullet Train fleshes out its cast of supporting characters to delightful effect.
One other standout member of Bullet Train's cast is Hiroyuki Sanada, a Japanese actor and martial artist who has turned in outstanding dramatic and action work for decades. Some of Sanada's recent credits include Westworld, Army of the Dead, and Mortal Kombat, in which he stole the show as Scorpion. Sanada spoke with Screen Rant about his Bullet Train character, performing action scenes in his 60s, and appearing in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4.
Screen Rant: You have such an incredible career, and have done so many films. What drew you to Bullet Train?
Hiroyuki Sanada: This is a perfect role for me. A lot of faces, my role Elder has. He has his own family history and background. It's a good balance between acting and action, mixing together with the emotion, [and] sometimes comedy sense. I really enjoyed shooting on set.
Screen Rant: And we see you in the trailer, but we don't know very much about your character, about the Elder. Can you talk a little bit about what kind of person he is, and what it was like to play him?
Hiroyuki Sanada: Yeah. He was an assassin, and retired, and became a flower design artist. But his son is also a former assassin, and [his] wife was killed by someone. His family history is a very important storyline in the movie. He's the Elder, but still strong, and a good family man. That's the biggest point for my role.
Screen Rant: You are 61, I believe, but you are all over the place and still doing these incredible action sequences. Mortal Kombat, Westworld, Bullet Train. Has your approach to doing those scenes changed over the years?
Hiroyuki Sanada: Yeah, every single role has a different background for the fighting style. Just matching for the character and the situation. That's the most interesting part. So I keep my health, and collaboration is always fun with the stunt guys, or coordinator, or director. I'm just enjoying myself.
Screen Rant: You're also in John Wick 4, which is so exciting. Is there anything that you can tell us about your character, or about the film?
Hiroyuki Sanada: It was my second time working with Keanu since 47 Ronin, so it was a great reunion. And kind of a similar situation in the movie, so that's the biggest hint. And of course, I had a fighting scene, too. Another enjoyable role for me.
Five assassins find themselves on a fast moving bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka with only a few stops in between. They discover their missions are not unrelated to each other.
