The former president of Nintendo of America recently spoke out about an encounter he had with Kanye West several years ago. Reportedly, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star wanted to collaborate with Nintendo to make a video game.
Fans may be shocked by the Yeezy designer’s interest in video games, but it actually isn’t the first time he’s tried to enter the world of gaming. In 2016, Kanye released a trailer called Only One on YouTube, for a video game where the player guides his mother Donda West to the afterlife. The Kanye West project didn’t last, unfortunately. Developers at Encyclopedia Pictura claimed they parted ways with the rap artist following the trailer’s release.
As reported by Dazed, Reggie spoke on the topic of his meeting with Kanye during the charity podcast, Talking Games with Reggie & Harold. According to Fils-Aime, West approached him during the gaming convention, E3, through the Mario designer Shigeru Miyamoto. “Part of it was talking about what he was up to. He was experimenting with a piece of video game content,” Reggie said. “He wanted reactions to it. The encounter with Reggie at E3 reportedly led to a formal meeting between Kanye and Nintendo. The gaming company ended up declining the collaboration because they claimed they had too many other commitments. Fils-Aime said that he had to break the news to West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, who was also present at the meeting. “We had so many different projects at Nintendo going on, the possibility of doing something with Kanye just wasn’t there. And so I had to find a way to politely decline this opportunity to work with him,” Reggie explained. “I told him, ‘Kanye, you don’t want to work with us because we’re tough, we’re hard. All we do is push for the very best content. We would not be the type of partner you would want to work with.’ And he looks at me and says, ‘Reggie, you’re exactly the type of partner I want because of that reason!’ It’s like, ‘Oh my gosh’.” Even though the video game project never worked out for Kanye, the KUWTK star has managed to stay busy making new music and fashion.
Kanye is known for pushing boundaries, but who knew he was interested in video games? Based on the Only One trailer, West’s video game would be closer to art than a real video game. Even though that isn’t a bad thing, it’s understandable that big gaming companies might not be interested in the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star’s project.
