Stephen Amell Reveals Arrow Season 1 Was Inspired By Dark Knight

Stephen Amell has revealed that the first season of the hit CW show Arrow was inspired by The Dark KnightArrow premiered on The CW in 2012, which was four years after Christopher Nolan's second Batman film, and coincidentally, the same year the conclusion to the Dark Knight trilogy was released.

Arrow was the first superhero show in the now called "Arrowverse". Since then, The CW has unveiled multiple other programs that are part of that world, including The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl - which moved from CBS to The CW beginning with season 2. While the Arrowverse shows can't generally be considered lighthearted, Arrow is typically darker than the other programs, especially earlier on in the series. Likewise, Nolan's The Dark Knight was very serious, and is widely considered one of the best superhero movies ever made. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, two of which it won, and currently sits at the number four spot on IMDb's Top Movies list. With the success that The Dark Knight saw with a darker approach to the genre, Arrow's inspiration shouldn't come as much of a shock.

As reported by Comic Book, Amell announced at Heroes and Villains Fan Fest London that Arrow was originally heavily inspired by Nolan's second Batman outing. This version of Arrow has even been called the "Green Batman," due to the darker tones of the first season. Amell confirmed this by saying, "When the show started the inspiration for the first season was absolutely, positively The Dark Knight. When I was sitting in [Arrow pilot director] David Nutter’s office, it was just photos of The Dark Knight. That was the inspiration for the first season.".

To longtime fans, this shouldn't be a surprise, since Arrow's first few seasons were much darker than recent episodes. That being said, the new season could be heading back to a grittier version of the show, as stunt coordinator James Bamford said that Arrow season 7 will "push the limits" of network television. Executive producer Beth Schwartz has also confirmed that Arrow season 7 will be dark in a manner similar to season 1.

As for future Batman connections to the Arrowverse, Ruby Rose was cast as Batwoman about a month ago, and will not only appear in the upcoming annual crossover, but will be getting her own show as well. With the upcoming introduction of Batwoman - and given the fact that Oliver Queen is currently in prison - now seems like the perfect time to go back to the show's roots and create another gritty season of Arrow.
