Nearly a year after an update from the filmmaker himself, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy is sharing what happened to Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy. Johnson wrote and directed the second installment in the franchise's sequel trilogy, 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which infamously divided fans while scoring rave reviews from critics and becoming a box office hit. Prior to the film's release, however, Lucasfilm had announced they would be teaming with Johnson for a new Star Wars trilogy set apart from the Skywalker Saga, though movement has been largely quiet in the years since.
