The latest gameplay trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has revealed the Terastal Phenomenon, which might be the laziest battle gimmick in the series to date. The Pokémon series has gradually added new elements to its battle system over time, with new types in Pokémon Gold and Silver, Double Battles in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Triple Battles in Pokémon Black and White, Mega Evolutions in Pokémon X and Y, Z-Moves in Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing in Pokémon Sword and Shield. It's notable that some of these gimmicks were dropped over time and replaced with new ones.
Pokémon X and Y introduced Mega Evolutions, which were the first gimmicks that involved altering the Pokémon in play. A Pokémon who Mega Evolved transformed into a whole new Pokémon, which usually meant a boost in stats, a new Ability, or even a type change. Pokémon Sun and Moon introduced Z-Moves, which were incredibly powerful attacks that could be used once per battle, some of which had unique properties or could only be used by certain Pokémon. The most recent gimmick was Dynamaxing in Pokémon Sword and Shield, which turned a Pokémon into a giant for three turns, drastically increasing its power and transforming its moves into stronger variants. There were some Pokémon with unique Gigantamax transformations, which not only gave them a new appearance but also gave them new G-Max attacks.
The latest gameplay trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has been released on The Official Pokémon YouTube Channel and it has revealed the new Terastallize mechanic, which is the new battle gimmick in Gen 9. Terastalling can be done by any Pokémon and it grants them a crystal-like appearance, and gives them a headdress with a jewel upon it, signifying the new Tera Type the Pokémon has acquired. There were rumors about Pokémon being able to change type circulating over the past few weeks, yet the truth is somehow even more disappointing than the leaks.
Terastallizing might be the laziest Pokémon gimmick to date. In terms of appearance, the Pokémon look like they have had a crystal filter applied to their skin and one of several hats stuck on their character model. The basic Dynamax ability just bumped up the size of the Pokémon, but at least the Gigantamax Pokémon forms looked awesome, such as Mothra Butterfree, longcat Meowth, and the return of chubby Pikachu. The Z-Moves for unique attacks also had cool cutscenes applied to them, like old-school Final Fantasy summons, which made them visually impressive, while most of the Mega Evolutions looked awesome on their own. It's likely that concessions had to be made in order to ensure this new gimmick could easily apply to all Pokémon, leading to a lackluster new form.
What's more disappointing is the battle effect for Terastallizing a Pokémon, as it seems that only improves the STAB bonus for moves that match the Tera Type. This might be game-changing for some Pokémon in the diehard competitive scene, but it's not going to mean a great deal for most players. An Eevee that gains a bonus when using Water-type moves isn't exactly on par with the old battle gimmicks and it feels underwhelming, even when compared to Dynamxing/Gigantamaxing. It's possible that there is some new awesome element to Terastallizing that has yet to be revealed, but right now, it looks like the laziest new Pokémon gimmick to date.
