Criminal Minds: Paget Brewster Recalls Seeing Her First Crime Scene Set

Paget Brewster describes the first time she stepped foot on a crime scene set for Criminal Minds. The original CBS FBI crime thriller ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020. However, Criminal Minds revival is on the way at Paramount+, receiving an official series order in July of this year. In the show, members of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) use their method of criminal profiling to investigate cases and identify perpetrators. Along the way, the members of the BAU also become closer as a team and confront their own demons. A massive hit, Criminal Minds launched an entire media franchise and continues to be a favorite among fans of true crime, praised for its lovable characters and titillating suspense.

The show’s original main cast consisted of Mandy Patinkin, Thomas Gibson, Lola Glaudini, Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook, and Kirsten Vangsness. Though Moore, Gibson, Gubler, Cook, and Vangsness remained for much of the series, the cast went through plenty of overhauls. Brewster joined the team as Emily Prentiss in season 2 and was featured regularly until her departure at the end of season 7. She returned as a core member of the main cast in season 12, remaining until the conclusion of the show. She is also set to star in the Paramount+ Criminal Minds revival. Brewster is a fan-favorite member of the cast and was even rehired due to viewer backlash when she was released from her contract after season 6. While the character Brewster portrays is known for her coolness, the actress wasn’t always so stoic.

In an interview with The List, Brewster recounts her first time on a crime scene set. She notes how strange the experience on Criminal Minds was:

The first time I went to a crime scene, you see the police tape, and there's a lovely young actress who's playing a dead prostitute, and you walk over, and they're covered in blood, and they're a little blue, and they're lying on the ground. You're like, 'Hi, I'm Amy' 'Hi, I'm Paget.' It's such a fun show to do, even though it's so dark, and maybe it's fun to do because it's so dark.

After plenty of seasons in the dark world of serial killers, it’s interesting to hear Brewster’s first impressions of what would become her life for the next twelve years, on and off. It’s understandable that her break from Criminal Minds was spent going back to her comedic roots with roles on Modern Family, Drunk History, and Community after a stint on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Most recently, Brewster has starred in the animated series Birdgirl and indie horror film Hypochondriac, showing off her diverse acting chops. With the Criminal Minds revival, Brewster will be seeing plenty more crime scene sets and has expressed her excitement about returning to that familiar world.

Brewster may be accustomed by now to the gothic nature of the procedural thriller, but her comments show there was a time when she wasn’t, though she played a character with an unblinking demeanor in the face of violence. The contrast just serves to highlight her talent as an actress, and her delight over the dark show proves she is perfect for the role. Hopefully, there will still be plenty of room for fun and new experiences in season 16 as the show tackles a new story arc for Emily Prentiss. With much of the original cast slated to return for the Criminal Minds revival, viewers of the series will be pleased to catch up with their favorite FBI agents once again.
