Why Superman's Earth Had An Oliver Queen (But Not Flash Or Supergirl)

Warning: Spoilers for Superman & Lois season 2, episode 15

Superman & Lois’ Arrowverse retcon excluded Supergirl and Flash from its universe but surprisingly did make room for Oliver Queen. Stephen Amell’s Arrowverse character was directly referenced by John Diggle in season 1, which means he definitely existed in the continuity of Superman & Lois. However, the same can’t be said for the Scarlet Speedster or the Girl of Steel.

For a long time now, there have been complaints about the disconnect between Superman & Lois and the rest of the Arrowverse. Obviously, this is an issue that’s going to exist in some form in any superhero show set in a shared universe, but it was always a bit more jarring with Superman’s show, especially considering the number of episodes where the Earth’s survival seemingly depended on Clark alone. The Superman & Lois season 2 finale finally resolved the problem when Sam Lane specifically stated that Superman is the only hero on the planet. The retcon provided confirmation that the world seen in Superman & Lois isn’t Earth-Prime. The Clark Kent who formed the Justice League with Barry, Kara, and others at the end of “Crisis on Infinite Earths” was a different version of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman.

The big Arrowverse reveal separates Superman from the other major superheroes, but apparently, an exception has been made for Green Arrow. A comment from Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing confirmed that there was indeed an Oliver Queen on Superman’s Earth, but he died at some point in the past [via TheFlashPodcast]. As for why there’s room for Oliver in the show’s canon (but not Barry or Kara), Helbing has pointed out that Superman & Lois’ new superhero rules just leave out other super-powered characters, which is why normal humans like Oliver can be a part of its history. Plus, Oliver’s inclusion may have been made necessary by the show’s use of Diggle. Taking Oliver out of his story would ruin eight seasons of character development.

The fact that Superman & Lois’ Earth has been a home for Clark and Oliver means that in a way, the reality depicted in this universe is essentially what the Arrowverse would have looked like if Superman had received Arrow’s first spinoff and not Barry Allen. On Earth-1, Team Arrow stood on their own until Barry burst onto the scene. After that, the Arrowverse’s two central heroes were Green Arrow and the Flash. The CW continued to add onto its small-screen adaption of the DC Universe with new characters, but it was the two of them that drove the stories of the Arrowverse since it all started with them. Superman & Lois, on the other hand, is a world where Oliver teamed up with Clark but never fought beside the Flash in any capacity.

Whatever happened to Oliver and how different his life was in Superman’s Arrowverse reality may never be relevant to the show’s story, but is it at least possible that the series will end up making something out of its Green Arrow connection. If Diggle continues to stick around, whether or not Oliver was the Green Arrow, what relationship he may have shared with Clark, and exactly how he died could all be explored in Superman & Lois season 3.
