Why Fans Are Convinced Godzilla vs. Kong 2 Is Really A Kong Movie

Rather than being a story about both monsters, fans are convinced that Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is really a Kong movie. When it was confirmed that a sequel to Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong was in development at Legendary Pictures, there was an impression that it would reunite the two rival Titans, whether it be for a rematch or a second team-up. However, perceptions of the upcoming MonsterVerse installment have since changed.

For more than a year, it was actually unclear if the MonsterVerse was going to continue at all. Although Godzilla vs. Kong was one of the most successful movies to come out of 2021, an overall lack of announcements raised some big concerns about the MonsterVerse’s future. Things started to look up when it was confirmed that the Titans are coming to the small screen via an Apple TV+ show. And now, Legendary has a release date for its next MonsterVerse movie. Though it’s being called Godzilla vs. Kong 2 unofficially, there still aren’t any details on what the movie’s story entails. All that’s known right now is that Wingard will be back in the director’s chair and that Dan Stevens will play the central human character.

As things stand, there seems to be a consensus among MonsterVerse fans that Kong will be the Titan who takes center stage when the movie releases on March 15, 2024. This idea that the MonsterVerse’s next movie is about Kong stems primarily from the rumors claiming it will be a Son of Kong adaptation. Earlier reports about Wingard directing a Son of Kong movie were supported by the reveal that the director is indeed coming back for Godzilla vs. Kong 2. With that being the case, there has been some degree of evidence for the sequel having a Kong focus, even if it hasn’t been officially confirmed by Legendary yet.

It may be premature to assume that the next MonsterVerse is really just Kong 2. Toho, the Japanese studio behind the Godzilla franchise, said on their official website that “Godzilla returns to the big screen in 2024” [via Toho]. Confirmation of Godzilla’s involvement casts doubt on this idea that the sequel will leave out the King of the Monsters in favor of Kong and his son. Instead, it may really be a proper sequel that continues both Titans’ stories.

After all, it should be pointed out that Godzilla’s return and the Son of Kong plotline don’t have to be mutually exclusive. The sequel can give Kong a family in his new home while also finding room for Godzilla, who could go on his own adventure either on the surface or in the hidden Hollow Earth world. Similar to how the last film’s story played out, Godzilla vs. Kong 2 can put the monsters on separate paths for most of the movie and see their respective storylines eventually collide. By the end of the movie, both Titans could be on the same side and ready to fight the main villain, which could once again turn out to be a powerful kaiju from Toho’s library.
