Warner Bros. just made a big mistake by using footage from Justice League in the trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Rather than making fans excited, the highly anticipated Shazam 2 trailer dredged up old arguments that the studio would have done well to avoid approaching. And, instead of building hype for the upcoming Shazam! sequel, the trailer's release led to #BoycottWB and similar hashtags trending on social media at the height of San Diego Comic-Con 2022.
It is already no secret that the DC Extended Universe panel at SDCC 2022 was widely viewed as a disappointment. At the same time Marvel Studios was announcing plans for upcoming films and television series into 2025, the DCEU panel was firmly focused upon WB's cinematic superhero offerings scheduled for the second half of 2022, Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It seemed like Warner Bros. was trying to start fresh and avoid any reference to the recent scandals involving both The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which are believed to be responsible for the release of these movies being delayed until 2023. Unfortunately for WB, the first trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods found an entirely different way to upset those fans hoping for a surprise announcement regarding the return of the Snyderverse.
The first trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods opens with a comedic scene of Shazam (Zachary Levi) lying on a couch and discussing his problems with a doctor, who is ultimately revealed to be a pediatrician rather than a psychiatrist. Shazam explains his origins and how he feels insecure because he was seemingly given superpowers by a wizard at random when other superheroes seem much more capable and confident than him. He makes specific reference to The Flash as "a superhero with a red suit with a lightning bolt on it," as well as Aquaman and Batman, as the trailer shows images of the mentioned heroes. The footage of The Flash and Batman were both taken from Zack Snyder's Justice League - proving Warner Bros. still hasn't learned from its past mistakes.
The Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer was gasoline on a fire following an announcement at SDCC 2022 by DC Chief Creative Officer-Publisher Jim Lee that DC and WB were moving on from the Snyderverse. This revelation meant some saw the use of footage from Zack Snyder's films as a bait-and-switch on the part of Warner Bros. In addition, many felt that the studio was trying to lure them into supporting the Shazam! series, which was always marketed as being more family-friendly than Snyder's darker superhero movies.
If the marketing department at Warner Bros. was truly trying to initiate a fresh start for its shared superhero universe, it picked the worst possible way of going about it. While there is something to the adage about there being no such thing as bad publicity, the controversy has overshadowed the trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods. As SDCC 2022 ended, more people were discussing Zack Snyder's Justice League and the movies they wished Warner Bros. would make rather than the one they were trying to promote.
