Ahead of the release of Samsung's One UI 5 beta, a massive leak has seemingly revealed many of its core features. Samsung is expected to release One UI 5 beta for the Galaxy S22-series later this month, although the exact date remains a mystery. The software is currently said to be under testing by Samsung employees before it gets a wider rollout. One UI 5 will be based on Android 13, making Samsung's latest flagships among the very first smartphones to get the latest flavor of Android.
In June, Google released the third Android 13 beta for its Pixel devices, putting the OS at the first stage of Platform Stability. The company had earlier released the first developer preview of Android 13 in February, followed by developer preview 2 in March. That was followed by the first public beta in April and the second public beta at the Google I/O developer conference in May. The final beta is expected to be released later this month before the stable release is rolled out alongside the launch of the Pixel 7 in August.
A post by tipster Max Weinbach on 9to5Google has seemingly revealed most of the unique features of Samsung's upcoming One UI 5.0. The build that formed the basis of Weinbach's post came from an unnamed source and revealed a lot about what to expect from the final, official build. The first notable difference with One UI 4 is the new notification icons and a slightly tweaked notification panel. Both changes make the panel look cleaner and more streamlined.
Another welcome change is the revamped security and privacy hub that now includes all accounts, passwords, security, and other privacy features in one place. There's also a 'Scan' option to search for any third-party app or service that might be abusing app permissions. It will also recommend security settings that some users could find helpful. Another notable feature is the addition of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to the Gallery app and keyboard. OCR enables users to copy tests from images and is currently available in iOS 16.
In yet another sign that Samsung might be moving away from bloating up its One UI skin with too many changes, the software uses the default AOSP permission dialogs. While it's not immediately clear if Samsung will still redesign it in the final build, it certainly looks cleaner as it is now. One UI 5 will also reportedly bring some new gestures for multitasking, as well as include a new collaboration feature in Samsung Notes, a currently active app display in quick settings, a device image at the top of the 'About phone' page and a UWB toggle in the settings.
