Just in time for Halloween, this October Marvel Comics will release a special one shot anthology Crypt of Shadows #1. The comic will feature an amazing lineup of writers and artist telling tales from the darkest depths of the Marvel Universe starring characters such as Moon Knight, Morbius, Wolverine, and more.
The anthology is an homage to the original Crypt of Shadows comic series that was published by Marvel in the 1970s. This original series was a horror story in the classic 1970s style. The comic series was about a man dealing with a phobia of dogs. In the midst of visiting a psychiatrist for counseling on his fear, the story moves through two other nested tales of supernatural horror until all the stories come together at the end in a horrific way. Though they share a name, this new anthology series is set to take place in the modern Marvel Universe and will star established characters.
Announced recently by Marvel, Crypt of Shadows #1 will give fans stories starring Morbius, Moon Knight, Wolverine, Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, and Werewolf by Night. It will also feature a story involving Bloodline, the daughter of Blade, who made her first appearance in this year's Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/X-Men #1. Though they star established characters these tales still promise to be horror in nature. The heroes and antiheroes of Marvel will find themselves facing vampires, werewolves, and all manner of monsters, and the comic promises to leave fans' spines tingling with fright.
Bringing these stories to the pages of Marvel Comics is an all-star lineup of talent, including former Marvel editor Chris Cooper. Best known for his work on the Darkhold saga he will be writing the Morbius story, which will also star Victoria Montesi. Writing stories along with Cooper will be Danny Lore, Rebecca Roanhorse, Adam Warren, and Chris Condon. The art provided by Karen S. Darboe, Geoff Shaw, Ibrahim Moustafa, and more will take some members of the Midnight Suns through haunting Halloween tales. Even Al Ewing who penned the story for the original 1970s Crypt of Shadows series will even be writing one of the stories. Marvel has promised more information about the one-shot comic in the coming weeks, including more talent announcements and story details.
The newly released cover art for the comic by Lenil Francis Yu promises true frights, and the heroes will find no escape from the monsters and their deepest fears. After all, the Marvel Universe is the perfect place to set a new horror anthology. In a world populated by aliens, robots, and wizards there are sure to be more than a few supernatural terrors lurking in the darkest corners. This fall, Marvel will bring out the claws, fangs, and chills for Halloween, and fans will get to see Moon Knight, Morbius, Wolverine, and others face tales of true terror. Marvel Comics' Crypt of Shadows #1 is due out on October 19, and will be available digitally and in local comic book stores.
