Indie stealth game Covert Critter, which serves as a love letter to the original Metal Gear Solid, has been released for free after only 12 days of development. 1998's Metal Gear Solid, directed by gaming icon Hideo Kojima, brought tactical espionage action into a 3D space and birthed a long line of sequels. While some sources claim that a Metal Gear Solid remake is in development, two independent developers have already recreated the title's gameplay and tone with anthropomorphic animals.
As a follow-up to Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, 1998's Metal Gear Solid translated its predecessors' stealth action mechanics into a 3D space. The title's innovative gameplay made sneaking past enemies tougher for Solid Snake, thanks to the introduction of mechanics like noisy floor textures and snow that leaves a trail of footprints behind him. However, Metal Gear Solid also introduced an arsenal of new tools for players to wield like remote-controlled missiles, infra-red goggles and a cardboard box disguise. The game's 3D environments also let Snake perform more tactical maneuvers, like peaking around corners and observing enemies in first-person view. A Metal Gear Solid Unreal Engine 5 remake gives the PlayStation classic a modern look, but indie developers have focused on recapturing the title's gameplay and atmosphere instead.
Indie developers sodaraptor and NormalHumanSixx recently released Covert Critter, a Metal Gear Solid-style stealth game starring a secret agent lizard, via itch.io. The "fully-fledged love letter to Metal Gear Solid" apparently took only 12 days to make, but it perfectly captures the Hideo Kojima classic's tone and gameplay. Cast as Koss, a reptilian covert operations specialist, players must infiltrate the GEKO Research Facility to thwart the plans of the Red Hawk terrorist group. Covert Critter tasks players with using Koss' camouflage ability and an arsenal of gadgets including drones, boomboxes and banana peels to sneak through eight varied levels.
Coming later this year, Undetected is another indie stealth game inspired by Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid. Rather than turning Solid Snake into a lizard, however, the upcoming title will cast players as another cyber-augmented secret agent named Tenoch Kaan. The top-down 3D stealth game will see players use a variety of gadgets and weapons to infiltrate the Chicxulub Perpetual Energy Station and rescue a Mexican revolutionary group. Undetected is being billed as a "Stealth Action Revival," with the project being a love letter to Metal Gear Solid in the same vein as Covert Critter.
Covert Critter is an extremely impressive tribute to Metal Gear Solid, especially since it only took 12 days to make. NormalHumanSixx and sodaraptor managed to not only recreate the stealth action classic's gameplay, but also its unique atmosphere and tone. With a variety of gadgets to use throughout its eight levels, Covert Critter should be an engaging experience for any Metal Gear Solid fan.
