How Top Gun 2 Inspired Legally Blonde 3, According to Reese Witherspoon

According to Reese Witherspoon, star of Legally Blonde 3, the writers for the upcoming sequel are drawing inspiration from an unlikely source - Top Gun: Maverick. It has been over twenty years since Witherspoon first appeared as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. The film rapidly grew in popularity, having success at the box office and garnering enough attention that a sequel was released only two years later. Luke Wilson also starred alongside Witherspoon in both films as her onscreen love interest.

The Legally Blonde films follow the life of a wealthy and seemingly clueless young woman named Elle. The first film follows Elle as she attempts to prove herself at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. However, as she slowly wins over the admiration of her peers and teachers, Elle discovers that she is capable of succeeding as a lawyer and doesn’t need to find validation in her relationship status with her former lover. Legally Blonde 2 follows a similar plot, with Elle proceeding to prove herself in Congress rather than law school. The sequel managed to bring an admirable sum of money upon release, but it generally received negative reviews from critics. Almost two decades went on to pass before a third installment was finally announced. High expectations are common when attempting to reboot or revisit cult classics and Legally Blonde 3 is no exception.

In an interview with USA Today, Witherspoon said those in charge of creating the sequel have looked to Top Gun: Maverick to guide the movie’s progress. Witherspoon says she hopes that the movie "comes together in the right way" and that the inspiration from Top Gun: Maverick, while seemingly random, actually makes a lot of sense. Read Witherspoon's full quote below:

"I'm still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way. It's just like 'Top Gun': They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it. So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people (back) then.”

The Office’s Mindy Kaling has been brought on to write the script for Legally Blonde 3 and she is wisely analyzing Top Gun’s formula for success. Although the movies are extremely different in nature, Top Gun: Maverick’s widespread praise may contain clues to help Legally Blonde 3 succeed as well. A large time-lapse existed between the release of Top Gun and its sequel. Audiences have also noted the movie’s character callbacks and nostalgia without being accused of being unoriginal or merely fan service.

Witherspoon’s comments in lieu of Top Gun 2 suggest that enthusiasts can expect cameos from some of the franchise’s classic characters. Selma Blair, Legally Blonde’s original antagonist, has already stated that she would be open to returning. However, Blair’s battle with multiple sclerosis may limit the capacity in which she could reprise her role should the writers choose to bring her back. Similarly, Top Gun 2 managed to adequately and effectively bring back Val Kilmer, who suffers from a career-altering ailment as well. The likenesses between the sequels are evident, but only time will tell if Legally Blonde 3 is able to discover the same recipe for success.
