Warning: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 4.
The Duffer Brothers reveal that they were heavily inspired by Star Wars for the ending and overall tone of Stranger Things season 4's finale. Season 4 volume 2 of the hit Netflix sci-fi series was released on July 1, 2022. Stranger Things season 5 is in early development and will serve as the show's final season.
In the shocking conclusion of Stranger Things season 4, the world was left in a dire state despite Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Jim Hopper (David Harbour), and the rest of the party ultimately being reunited, and Vecna's (Jamie Campbell Bower) plan supposedly being halted. Eleven is hiding from the US government, the group is left to deal with the death of Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), Max Mayfield's (Sadie Sink) comatose state, and a gigantic gate to the Upside Down has been opened in the center of Hawkins, corrupting the world around it. With the Duffer Brothers' teasing Stranger Things season 5's story following the release of volume 2, the showrunners have revealed how the season's cliffhanger was inspired by the Star Wars franchise.
In an interview with Collider, the Duffer Brothers revealed that the season 4 finale was inspired by Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for both its tone and season 5 set-up. Revealing that they had hoped to create an Empire Strikes Back-inspired ending, Matt Duffer stated that they intended to leave the central characters are left to grapple with a sense of loss. Duffer then stated that the cast watching spores from the Upside Down falling on Hawkins was an early idea directly taking inspiration from the Rebel heroes looking out of the medical frigate at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, creating a foreboding tone. Check out the full response below.
"We always have wanted to do an Empire Strikes Back ending, which we tried to do with [Season 4]. Where it's the sense of loss.
We knew we wanted to end with spores falling in Hawkins, I don't remember how early in the process [we wanted that], but pretty early in the process. Like I said, we were very much inspired by Empire Strikes Back, that ending where they're looking out the window... We wanted to hand at the notion of war, and a supernatural war coming to Hawkins."

The Duffer Brothers have revealed Stranger Things season 5's release date is still uncertain, despite season 4's ending setting up the show's final season. In an interview released in July 2022, Duffer stated that the season was still in incredibly early development, with many involved in working on the series wanting more time to work on the show's final season. While the showrunners understand the desire to see what happens next as soon as possible, Duffer emphasized that both he and Ross Duffer placed more importance on quality rather than releasing the final season quickly.
Stranger Things season 4's parallels with The Empire Strikes Back can be seen not just in its ending but throughout the season, from dividing its cast into separate storylines that tie together in the conclusion and revealing truths about its character's past. With Stranger Things season 5 set to feature a time skip, further parallels can be seen with Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, which also featured a significant period of time passing between installments. With The Empire Strikes Back being an influence on Stranger Things season 4 finale, fans may wonder if its following installment may influence the final season.
