How Fleabag Inspired She-Hulk MCU Show Explained By Star

With its blend of genres, star Tatiana Maslany reveals how Fleabag inspired her She-Hulk: Attorney at Law show. Created by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the BBC comedy centered on the titular character as she navigated her life in London, enjoying her free-spirited and sexually active nature, while also coming to terms with her family relationships and anger issues. Running for two seasons, Fleabag scored widespread critical acclaim for its clever and darkly humorous writing, the originality of its titular character's development and the performances from its cast, namely Waller-Bridge, who scored three Primetime Emmy wins for Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as two Golden Globes for the similar latter two categories.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law marks the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction of Jennifer Walters, an attorney who is transformed into the super-powered green being after a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner. While still struggling to get a grip on her powers, Jennifer will find her life further upended when she is assigned to deal with cases involving superhumans by her law firm, including Tim Roth's Emil Blonsky, making his first proper MCU return since The Incredible Hulk after Abomination was briefly seen in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Tatiana Maslany is leading the cast of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law as Jennifer alongside Jameela Jamil as She-Hulk's rival Titania, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jon Bass, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Roth, Mark Ruffalo as Banner/Smart-Hulk and Benedict Wong as Wong.

Ahead of the show's premiere, GamesRadar caught up with the cast and crew to discuss She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. In looking at the unique tone of the series, head writer Jessica Gao reveals the writer's room frequently discussed Fleabag with star Tatiana Maslany explaining how she feels the British comedy inspired the MCU show. See what Maslany said below:

"The irreverence of [Fleabag] and the sense of humor... there’s a lot there that I can definitely see that they drew from as inspiration."

Given the show's consistent acclaim across its sole two seasons, Gao and Maslany's reveal that Fleabag influenced the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law show is sure to come as a promising tease for fans of the British comedy. As the two explained, some of Waller-Bridge's sense of humor and writing style could be felt in recent She-Hulk trailers, which saw Maslany's Jennifer breaking the fourth wall, a signature trademark of the Fleabag character, while also bringing a sarcastic tone similar to that of the BBC series. With Fleabag having also received praise for its character development across its two seasons, it will be interesting to see if She-Hulk: Attorney at Law also takes a similar approach to evolving Jennifer and those around her, or if it brings its own style.

While Fleabag serving as an influence for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is another exciting reveal into the show's development, Jessica Gao is no stranger to prestige awards herself. Prior to joining the MCU, Gao scored acclaim for her work in Rick and Morty season 3, penning the Emmy-winning "Pickle Rick" episode, making her the latest writer from the hit Adult Swim show to make her mark on the MCU alongside Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Jeff Loveness. Only time will tell how Gao's past writing and Fleabag influence fares with critics and audiences when She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on Disney+ on August 17.
