Every Upcoming Marvel Movie Character Who Could Join Thunderbolts

Rather than the usual Avengers film, Phase 5 of the MCU will end with a Thunderbolts movie, and here is every potential future character that could appear on the team. The Thunderbolts are a team of antiheroes from Marvel Comics, not unlike DC's Suicide Squad. Interestingly, Marvel Studios is choosing this project as their cap of Phase 5, allowing them to delve into morally grey characters to an extent the MCU hasn't thus far.

The Thunderbolts movie was officially announced during Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. This announcement naturally led to many questions and predictions about Thunderbolts, with much speculation centering on which characters will make up the MCU's Thunderbolts roster. Throughout Phases 1-4, Marvel Studios have provided some answers as to potential members of the team.

Some of these include John Walker/US Agent from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova of Black Widow and Hawkeye fame, Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp, the Abomination, Taskmaster, and finally, Helmut Zemo from Captain America: Civil War. While these are all characters already introduced in the MCU who will likely be part of the Thunderbolts team, Kevin Feige's Hall H comments led many to believe some characters who have not yet been introduced to the MCU would make up the rest of the roster. With that in mind, here is every potential upcoming Marvel character who could be part of Thunderbolts.

Firstly, it is worth mentioning a character who is already confirmed to actually be introduced to the MCU at some point in the future. That character is none other than Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. Wade Wilson is confirmed to be appearing in Deadpool 3although the film hasn't yet received a release date from Marvel Studios. With that being said, the film is bound to release during Phase 6, with plenty of project-less slots confirmed for the Multiverse Saga's final Phase. It would be logical then for Marvel Studios to introduce Deadpool to the MCU in Thunderbolts before appearing in his own MCU film. This would follow the comics also, given how Deadpool was a part of the sixth iteration of the Thunderbolts.

Another potential member of the Thunderbolts could be Elektra. While Elektra's inclusion in the MCU's future hasn't been confirmed, the confirmation of Daredevil's official return following cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law could open the door for other characters used on Netflix's Marvel shows. While it isn't yet clear whether or not Daredevil: Born Again will be canon with both the Netflix Marvel shows and the MCU, Elektra is a likely inclusion to the universe either way. If the Netflix shows are confirmed to be canon, Elektra's ending was somewhat ambiguous, leaving the door open for a return. On the other hand, if the Netflix shows aren't canon, Elektra is a big part of Daredevil's supporting characters in the comics meaning she could appear in Born Again. As Elektra in the comics was part of the same Thunderbolts as Deadpool, she has a connection to the team that Marvel Studios could adapt in Thunderbolts.

Another Netflix Marvel character who could come to the MCU - and also be part of the Thunderbolts movie - is the Punisher. The Punisher was a major player in the Netflix universe, played by Jon Bernthal. Since the appearance of Daredevil in the MCU calls for Bernthal's return as Frank Castle have been overwhelming. If the Punisher is in fact brought back into the MCU fold, Thunderbolts would be an ideal place to further explore the character. The Punisher is one of the main Marvel characters who fit the antihero description and was a member of the Thunderbolts in the comics at the same time as both Deadpool and Elektra.

The final character from the Marvel Netflix shows that could continue their MCU journey through the Thunderbolts is Luke Cage. Luke Cage was actually the leader of a Thunderbolts team during the Heroic Age storyline of Marvel Comics at the request of Captain America. With Daredevil: Born Again bringing back two Netflix Marvel characters in their own series, Luke Cage, played by Mike Colter, could also return. If he does, putting him in Thunderbolts would be a smart move for Marvel Studios for the same reasons as Punisher, Elektra, and Deadpool. The main reason why all of these characters would work is that, should MCU fans have seen their previous stories, the characters would need little-to-no setup as their backstories would already be known.

A recent comment from Kevin Feige in an interview with MTV News has brought the idea of Ghost Rider coming to the MCU to the fore. When questioned about Ryan Gosling potentially playing Ghost Rider in the MCU, after Gosling admitted his desire to play the character, Feige made a mention of both Blade and Doctor Strange concerning the MCU's supernatural characters as Ghost Rider fits in that facet of Marvel heroes. While this hints at a potential Midnight Sons team in the MCU, Ghost Rider was also a member of the Thunderbolts at the same time as Punisher, Elektra, and Deadpool. Where Ghost Rider could be introduced before Thunderbolts is the main question. However, if Marvel Studios find a place to do this, potentially in 2023's Blade, Ghost Rider's appearance in the MCU's Thunderbolts could certainly be a possibility.

Another Marvel character that was part of Luke Cage's Thunderbolts team during the Heroic Age storyline was Juggernaut. Juggernaut is a character that, while not a mutant himself, is often associated with X-Men stories, often being part of Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants. The character in live-action was previously owned by Fox, appearing in X-Men: The Last Stand and Deadpool 2. With Deadpool coming to the MCU, as well as the inevitable introduction of mutants after Ms. Marvel, Juggernaut coming to the MCU is a possibility. This could lead to him becoming part of the Thunderbolts movie. While it may be too early to introduce him in 2024's movie, any potential sequel to the film could include this character.

One of the more unlikely inclusions in the MCU's Thunderbolts are ironically characters confirmed to appear in the MCU in the coming months. The Wrecking Crew is a small band of supervillains from Marvel Comics, with an adaptation set to be part of She-Hulk as villains in the show. The inclusion of the team in She-Hulk certainly opens up the potential for an appearance of the team as part of the Thunderbolts. However, given the crew is only set to have a small role in She-Hulk, it is unlikely they will be recurring characters. If the Wrecking Crew ever do come back though, their time on the Thunderbolts during the Thunderbolts Army arc in Civil War could lead to them being part of a future variation of the team in the MCU.

One of the more interesting things to note about the Marvel Comics Thunderbolts is that there have been many different iterations. This means that a wide array of superheroes, supervillains, and antiheroes have been part of the team from all corners of the Marvel Comics world. Naturally, this means that many could be included amongst the MCU's Thunderbolts team members should they be introduced to the universe. However, the names above are simply the more likely to be introduced to the team given their future status, or potential future appearance, in the MCU. That being said, it remains to be seen who Marvel Studios bring into the MCU fold to be part of Thunderbolts, with the full roster likely not being revealed until promotion for the movie begins before its 2024 release date.
