WWE superstar Big E is expected to fully recover from a broken neck, according to a recent report. That is wonderful news as the SummerSlam premium live event is just around the bend for the company. The New Day member was dropped on the top of his head during a suplex spot with Ridge Holland during a match on March 11, and it was immediately clear that something had gone wrong.
It turned out that Big E had fractured two cervical vertebrae, his C1, and C6, and at the time it wasn't clear exactly what the long-term ramifications would be for him. He recently indicated on Twitter that his C1 wasn't ossifying (growing bone) yet, but also noted that things were progressing well enough that surgery was off the table. A video of Big E tossing his neck brace into a garbage can also went somewhat viral, as fans celebrated the former WWE Champion's positive progress.
Big E has since elaborated on that tweet, speaking with Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com. Raimondi gave the following update: "Former WWE champion Big E considers himself 'grateful' that doctors have said he will make a complete recovery from a broken neck he suffered during a March match despite a recent setback that will keep him out of the ring for at least a full year." Big E also told ESPN that his recovery "hasn't been a dark period," adding that "I'm not saying every day is the greatest ever for me. But I really haven't struggled with that type of stuff."
The 36-year-old also stressed that had no ill feelings towards Holland, and all things considered, this is about as good as news about a broken neck can be. Any number of things could have gone wrong for Big E, both on the night that he suffered the injury and in the months since. While the recent setback will continue to keep him out of action for the foreseeable future, it's also noteworthy that he didn't suffer any ligament or nerve damage to his neck and spine.
For the time being, Big E is going to be involved with an upcoming WWE tryout that will feature more than 50 recently graduated athletes. That event will take place between July 27 and July 29 during SummerSlam weekend, and he'll be joining the likes of Triple H and evaluating potential future WWE superstars. This ties in with the company's shift in developmental direction following the rebranding of NXT. What once was a launch pad for former independent stars like Adam Cole and Kevin Owens is now a training ground for young, up-and-coming superstars who have backgrounds in athletics. The idea seems to be that WWE would rather teach an athlete how to wrestle instead of training a wrestler how to be athletic. It'll be quite a while until it's clear whether or not this approach will work long-term. For the time being, though, this is great news for Big E and professional wrestling fans everywhere.
