An Ahoska live-action TV series is being produced for Disney+, and its best storyline means bad news for a possible animated Star Wars Rebels sequel. From the moment Rosario Dawson guest-starred in The Mandalorian season 2 as a live-action version of the Clone Wars character Ahsoka, the idea that she would get her own Disney+ series became increasingly likely. Subsequently, the Ahsoka show was announced, placing a question as to what the Lucasfilm plans for the storylines set up in Rebels are.
Before showing up in The Mandalorian, the last chronological Ahsoka appearance had been in Star Wars Rebels. While Ahsoka was not the main character in Rebels like she was in Clone Wars, the character had a lot of screentime in Rebels season 2, which ended with her iconic confrontation with Darth Vader. Ahsoka would then return for key moments in Star Wars Rebels season 4.
Given Star Wars Rebels’ final scene, in which Ahsoka meets with Sabine to begin looking for Ezra, there is really no better storyline for Ahsoka than the search for Ezra and Thrawn. In fact, it was revealed in The Mandalorian season 2 that Ahsoka is still looking for Thrawn. However, if Ezra’s whereabouts storyline teased at the end of Rebels is transferred to live-action, then the chances of a sequel or any form of animated follow-up to Rebels is getting considerably lower. The Star Wars Rebels’ finale was clearly not meant to be a definite end to the story, and many were taking for granted that Dave Filoni would soon pick up the plotline of Ahsoka and Sabine looking for Ezra. Years after the Rebels finale, Filoni did pick up that idea, but in the live-action show will be from the “Mandoverse” rather than in an animated Rebels sequel.
It is important to point out that the circumstances in which the Rebels finale was made were very different from the ones which Star Wars is in now. Thanks to Disney+ and the constant search of the streaming platforms for more original content, especially on the live-action side of things, Star Wars live-action TV shows have become the franchise’s current trend. The Mandalorian is not only one of Disney+’s flagship series but also one of the most well-received Star Wars properties made under Disney, so a push for more live-action Star Wars shows makes sense. Considering Dave Filoni, one of the minds behind The Mandalorian, is also the co-creator of Ahsoka, the option for a show centered around the character was a natural evolution. Many other storylines from the animated series are also being paid off in live-action, such as Bo Katan’s quest for the Darksaber in The Mandalorian and Cad Bane’s return in The Book of Boba Fett.
The price, however, is that Star Wars Rebels will likely not get a proper animated sequel. Instead, the main storyline teased in the epilogue will be carried over into the Ahsoka show, in which live-action versions of Sabine, Ezra, and Thrawn are expected. This also places the question of what the scope of the Ahsoka show will be and if it will manage to pay off the Thrawn and Ezra storyline without steering the focus away from Ahsoka in her own series - just as The Book of Boba Fett infamously did to its title protagonist in early 2022.
