A new Spider-Man has been revealed for the upcoming film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse through the film's merchandise. A sequel to the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set for release in theaters on June 2, 2023. The film will see the return of Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and Peter B. Parker along with a variety of other Spider-People.
Already confirmed for the film are Spider-Man 2099 voiced by Oscar Isaac, Spider-Woman voiced by Issa Rae and the Japanese Spider-Man from the 1970's Toei series. The main villain of the film will be The Spot, voiced by Jason Schwartzman, and will also feature Vulture voiced by Lonely Island's Jorma Taccone. Just like its predecessor, it is expected to feature a number of different versions of Spider-Man and one may have just been revealed due to the film's merchandise, the Spider-Punk incarnation of the character.
Merchandise for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has found its way online and two toys confirm that Spider-Punk will appear in the upcoming film. The Twitter account Malachi posted two images confirming the character's appearance. The first is a toy electric guitar which is a signature item of Spider-Punk, while the other is the character's mask with the signature spike mohawk on the classic Spider-Man mask. Created by Dan Slott and Oliver Coipel, Spider-Punk debuted during the Spider-Verse saga in the comics and is the Spider-Man of Earth-138. Real name Hobart Brown, a variant of the Prowler in the main 616 Spider-Man comics, Spider-Punk is from a reality where Norman Osborn is President and uses V.E.N.O.M. troops to control the world. While the character is a recent addition to the comics, first appearing in 2015, he has managed to become an iconic piece of imagery and was a cameo in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series and was an unlockable alternative costume in the PS4 Spider-Man game. Spider-Punk recently got a new comic in what might have been an early indicator of his big screen debut.
Spider-Punk's role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently unknown. Merchandise is often a tricky element to base off on as even a small cameo character can be made into a toy and sometimes merchandise for a film does not reveal anything about a movie. However given the popularity of the character and the immediate iconic image, it is a safe bet the character will have a memorable role, particularly depending on who they get to perform the voice of the character. With a third movie planned, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, set for release in 2024 Spider-Punk might have a larger role in the franchise moving forward.
