Line of Duty season 7 could still happen, according to star Martin Compston. Despite only wrapping up its potential final season last year, the cop drama has become quintessential British TV viewing, making household names of stars Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar. The twist-heavy investigations of anti-police corruption squad AC-12 also recently attracted the attention of Stephen King, with Line of Duty's season 6 acting as the perfect distraction from a real-life horror the author endured.
But while viewers clamor for more Line of Duty, season 6 seemingly wrapped up the show's overarching storyline once and for all. The show finally revealed the identity of the thorn in AC-12's side, the mysterious H, a corrupt police officer who acted as the ringleader behind many of the squad's criminal investigations. Although the show managed to tie off many of its loose ends with season 6, many were left disappointed with the reveal of H, leading fans to call out for more episodes of the popular police drama.
Talking to Radio X, Compston has revealed his thoughts on revisiting Line of Duty for a potential season 7. When asked if another season was a possibility, Compston said "we think so", explaining that, while he appreciates fan demand, "there's nothing changed" in reference to the year or so break between each season. Compston also explained how, due to Covid restrictions, season 6 wasn't an enjoyable filming experience. Check out his comments below:
"Look. It's not an excuse to kind of go and do a show just because you want a night out or whatever, but it's such a sociable show in terms of us, pals, and going out with crew and all that stuff. And we filmed the last one during COVID and all that and it was a tough shoot and kind of miserable, because we were one of the first jobs back and it was literally on set, nowhere near anybody, and then back to your flat. We couldn't even mix with each other. So I think for us, it wouldn't be nice to go out that way, we'd like to do one more with everybody and have it… but again that’s no reason to go… [...[ But, yeah, I think there’s definitely scope for it."

More than anything, Compston's comments are a sobering reminder of the difficulties Covid has had, not only on the production of movies and shows, but also on the disruption on cast and crew too. With show's like Line of Duty relying so heavily on close-up, narrative driven scenes, it's no wonder filming the show under such tight restrictions was a major problem for the cast. A Line of Duty season 7 would not only help create a potentially more satisfying ending for fans disappointed with season 6's big reveal, but would also allow the cast to have one last season working together.
Whether more Line of Duty will come to fruition remains to be seen, but hearing that the cast are so keen to get involved is great news for fans. That being said, showrunner Jed Mercurio is currently busy creating great British crime dramas elsewhere, most recently helming Trigger Point, which also stars McClure. The rest of the show's main cast also find themselves tied up with other projects currently, so only time will tell if Line of Duty will make a triumphant return sometime in the future.
