A writer behind Disney’s Encanto breaks down the costumes that Mirabel wears during her and Antonio's gift ceremonies. Encanto was released in 2021 to acclaim from critics and audiences alike, who praised the film’s bold direction and Colombian setting. The film has been nominated in the Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Animated Feature categories at the upcoming Academy Awards, and its soundtrack, featuring songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, has become one of the most successful Disney soundtracks of all time.
The film’s story centers on Mirabel Madrigal and her quest to bring her family back together as their unique, magical gifts begin to fade. Among the aspects for which the film received praise was the stunningly detailed character animation and design. Each member of the Madrigal family was animated with clothes, hair, and other details that reflected their personalities and gifts. The film is also filled with little details that hint at the story, as well as the family’s past.
Now, in an interview with Vanity Fair, the creators of Encanto break down the scene in which Antoino receives his gift and shed light on some of its finer details. The film’s co-writer, Charise Castro Smith, takes the opportunity to examine Mirabel’s clothing in a flashback to her gift ceremony, contrasting it with what she is wearing in the film’s present day. And then, also her costume we were really thinking that this moment of becoming in the family Madrigal is like a little first communion. It's a rite of passage. Antonio has his cute white little suit, and Mirabel has her little first communion looking dress. Its like a ritual they all have to go through. The embroidery on her dress is little butterflies because she doesn't have her gift yet. Everyone's costume, once they get their gift, has something to do with their gift. But this means she's in this moment before its happened. She's got butterflies because she doesn't know what her gift is going to be yet.
Audiences have been examining each frame of Encanto since its release to find hidden details, and so will be delighted to hear more in the co-writer’s own words. Castro Smith’s explanation expands on the overt symbolism that audiences have already picked up on, to show that even the smallest character features were intentional. Her comments also highlight the astounding level of thought and attention that was poured into the film from the creative teams.
Those impressed by Encanto will now turn their attention to what the team behind the film goes on to do next. Talk of an Encanto 2 or TV show spinoff has been ever-present since the film’s release, but it would be hard for any sequel to live up to the impossibly high standards that Encanto sets for modern animation. Nevertheless, Disney’s creative teams are some of the most talented in the industry, and they will no doubt find a way to move on from Encanto in a way that audiences will appreciate and be equally enthralled by.
