The Fantastic Four Pays A Subtle Tribute To Rick and Morty

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Fantastic Four #40

Fans of Rick and Morty rejoiced upon reading this specific issue of Fantastic Four as Reed Richards paid a subtle tribute to the Adult Swim series within its pages. Rick and Morty are well known for their multiversal travelings, but they are also notorious for taking inspiration from the Fantastic Four Marvel Comics series. Now, it seems the tables have turned as it is the Fantastic Four who are referencing Rick and Morty instead of the other way around.

In Fantastic Four #40 by Dan Slott and Rachael Stott, the Fantastic Four along with many other Marvel heroes are reeling after the evil alien species known as the Reckoning blew up the moon. Before the invasion progressed, the superheroes went back to their headquarters to come up with a game plan as to how to fight these ancient conquerors.

When the Fantastic Four got back to the Baxter Building, Reed Richards’ daughter, Val, alerts her dad to the impact the moon blowing up will have on Earth and says they should create a new moon right away. Reed Richards callously says he’ll get right on that, then lists off a number of immense threats he also has to deal with beforehand, saying, “...after we save this plane of existence. And I use the restroom. Be right back”. In this scene, Reed Richards is channeling his inner Rick both in terms of how casual he is about the potential end of existence to his arrogance in believing he is the only one who can save the day. But, the Rick-est part of the whole scene is when Reed says he has to use the restroom before handling an immensely dangerous threat.

In Rick and Morty season 3 episode 1 titled, “The Rickshank Rickdemption”, Rick escapes from the Galactic Federation by transferring his consciousness to the nearest enemy in his vicinity in order to blend in and getaway. However, Rick didn’t just plan on fleeing from his captors as well as the Council of Ricks who sent assassins to kill him, he wanted to take them out permanently. While Rick orchestrated and carried out the destruction of two powerful cosmic governments, he never made a move until he first went to the restroom in whichever new body his consciousness leaped into.

Just like Rick waited until after he relieved himself to continue on with his plan to wipe out deadly cosmic conquerors, Reed Richards took a trip to the restroom before tackling the threat of existence-destroying villains. While this is a very subtle tribute, it is worth pointing out due to the history these two properties have together. Rick and Morty has been greatly inspired by the Fantastic Four for a number of its characters and ideas, including the Council of Ricks being its version of the Council of Reeds and Mr. Nimbus being a clear parody of Namor. In this rare and hilarious random instance, the Fantastic Four pays a subtle tribute to Rick and Morty for a change, with Reed Richards going full Rick in how he prepares for battle.
