An upcoming Steam update, which will change several game discount rules, will remove sales lower than 10% and higher than 90%. The highly-successful digital distribution platform, created by video game developer and publisher Valve, maintains a library of thousands of games that continues to grow daily. Changes to sale and discount rules on Steam were announced on February 6, though few details were provided at the time.
Steam has become a premier distribution platform for PC games, with the service currently hosting thousands of AAA and indie titles for users to browse through. Valve offers frequent updates to the platform's user interface, ensuring a modern experience with quality-of-life improvements such as the recently-added ability to see how much space a game will take up on a PC. Another major draw for Steam is its frequent sales, which allow patient gamers to purchase new titles at a bargain. Custom discounts also cannot last for more than two weeks or for less than a single day. However, perhaps the most dramatic change is that Steam discounts must now be greater than 10% and less than 90%. This removes the platform's exciting 95%-off sales, likely to the disappointment of many users.
These changes to Steam's discount policy are quite dramatic, but the announcement precedes the even more dramatic February release date of Steam Deck. Valve's portable PC, announced back in July 2021, will allow gamers to take the Steam library with them on the go thanks to a handheld design. The system will use a variety of controls to make even the most complex titles accessible, though not every Steam game will be compatible with the portable system. Valve will utilize a verification system for every title in its library, allowing Steam Deck players to instantly know whether a game is fully compatible with the handheld.
Steam sales are a major draw for many of the platform's users, with huge quarterly sales allowing gamers to find thousands of different games at a reduced price. However, 95% discounts will become a thing of the past on March 28 as part of the platform's overhaul of sales and discounts. While many users will no doubt be upset by this change, the update will still allow for very substantial Steam sales of up to 90%.
