The casting of Chameleon in Sony Pictures’ Kraven the Hunter movie kills a Spider-Man: Far From Home theory. Reportedly, The White Lotus and Pam & Tommy actor Fred Hechinger will be playing Dmitri Smerdyakov aka The Chameleon alongside Aaron-Taylor Johnson’s titular character in Kraven the Hunter. Like Kraven himself, Chameleon is an iconic member of Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery.
Chameleon’s casting hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but an appearance from the character would make a lot of sense. Known for his expertise in creating foolproof disguises, the criminal is a longtime ally of Kraven and the villain’s half-brother. He was also the character who triggered Kraven’s conflict with Spider-Man. In the comics, many of Kraven’s battles with Spider-Man – including their first fight – were tied to Chameleon in one way or another. In the beginning, Kraven went after Spider-Man as a favor to Dimitri. Based on the importance of their relationship to Spider-Man comics, there’s always been a sense that a Kraven movie would include him in some capacity.
If it’s true that Hechinger is joining Kraven the Hunter as Chameleon, this throws water on all the theories about the character already being in the MCU. Before (and after) Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was assumed by many that Numan Acar’s Dimitri character was Chameleon, even though Nick Fury’s subordinate had little in common with the comic character. Admittedly, they shared the same name, but that could have been just a reference to the villain. And though he didn’t become the Chameleon and wasn’t depicted as a criminal, it was speculated that he could evolve into the Spider-Man villain in a future MCU installment. The idea was that the identity he was using in Far From Home was just an elaborate disguise. However, any chances of that reveal ever happening will evaporate if the casting report is confirmed.

it’s highly unlikely that there will be two versions of Chameleon, regardless of how the multiverse works. Spider-Man: No Way Home hinted at Kraven hailing from a different universe, so each movie having their own Chameleon is theoretically possible. Even so, the existence of both characters would be problematic. It would be unnecessarily confusing for viewers, so it stands to reason that Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Dimitri will never become the real Chameleon, and that Kraven the Hunter will be his true live-action debut. It’s hard to imagine the MCU exploring the possibility of Dimitri becoming Chameleon if Kraven the Hunter has its own version.
Since Spider-Man: Far From Home never provided a clear answer on Dimitri’s identity and maintained only a light connection to the comic character, it’ll be easy for Marvel to forget about him and move on. And after Kraven the Hunter, there may not be a need for Dimitri to be the Chameleon anyway. If the movie properly adapts his character, his skillset, and his relationship with Kraven, Sony’s Spider-Man universe can create the definitive version of the classic comic book villain.
