DC Destroyed Superman Comics Showing A Baby Kal-El Being Microwaved

Babysitting a baby Superman would be a challenging task and a destroyed comic once revealed little Kal-El got into a world of trouble as an infant, including ending up getting microwaved. In a then-controversial Elseworlds 80-Page Giant anthology, a story from Kyle Baker and Liz Glass showed the difficulties of looking after a baby Superman. However, once the comic was scheduled for release, DC Comics decided to stop production on the issue and destroy already printed comics as it was deemed too inappropriate.

So, how does an issue that featured a Superman-starring satirical take on Bill Clinton's impeachment, as well as another story that saw Lex Luthor travel back in time to become Wonder Woman's father get deemed too controversial? In 1999, DC Comics Vice President Paul Levitz read the story "Letitia Lerner, Superman's Babysitter," in which Ma and Pa Kent decide to get a babysitter so they can have a date night decided to pulp the issue. But, in a hilarious turn of events, the story ended up winning an Eisner Award, leading DC Comics to reprint the comic later.

Letitia Lerner, Superman's Babysitter by Kyle Baker and Liz Glass is a hilariously cartoonish tale featuring the struggles of looking after a baby Kal-El. In the comic, Letitia Lerner looks after baby Superman but quickly discovers how much trouble he can cause with his powers - even as an infant. He uses a giant boulder to break through the floor, swings off a ceiling fan, and bites into a telephone cord. On top of that, he drinks milk straight from a cow (while lifting it), and knocks over a water tower while being chased. Finally, back on Pa and Ma Kent's farm, he ends up climbing inside a microwave as the comic ends, zapping himself. Despite all the trouble, the Kents (who have no doubt experienced his super-infant shenanigans) offer to pay her double and ask her to work the following weekend.

The immediate reaction from DC Comics VP Paul Levitz was to cancel the comic mid-production. However, 2,000 comics reportedly were already shipped in the U.K. Elseworlds 80-Page Giant still be can be found on eBay, with a CGC 9.8 copy selling earlier this month for nearly $1,200.

The story from Baker and Glass would end up winning Best Short Story at the 2000 Eisner Awards. Baker would also win Best Humor Writer/Artist partly due to his contributions to the book. The wins would force DC Comics to later reprint the story in versions of  Bizarro Comics, which collected some of the more absurd stories the publisher has ever released. More than 20 years later, it's still absolutely hilarious rman-baby-brain/ microwaving himself was so controversial it needed to be destroyed.
