The official trailer for The Starling, an upcoming Netflix drama, shows Melissa McCarthy battling the complications of heartbreak, love, and a relentless bird outside her home. McCarthy, whose role in Bridesmaids brought her critical recognition, stars alongside fellow Bridesmaids co-star Chris O'Dowd in this upcoming comedy-drama about the journey of dealing with grief after a traumatic loss. Directed by Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures) and written by Matt Harris, Netflix releases The Starling on September 24.
The Starling trailer unveiled a look inside the film's tear-jerking premise and heartwarming narrative. The story follows Lilly (McCarthy) and her husband Jack (O'Dowd) as they deal with a miscarriage. The two seem to be coping with the shared tragedy in notably different ways. While Jack faces his healing process in a mental institution, Lilly focuses on handling a pesky starling bird who won't leave her home. Added to the mix is Larry, a veterinarian with a background in mental health, who interjects into the couple's life in all the right ways. Check out The Starling's official trailer below:
Initially recognized for her over-the-top comedic performances, McCarthy has made a slow transition into more subdued, emotionally-layered roles, such as her role as author Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me? She also stars in Nine Perfect Strangers, a new Hulu drama series co-starring Nicole Kidman. After a peek into her performance for The Starling, it's evident that McCarthy may keep raising the stakes and continue to pull at audiences' heartstrings.
