While The Big Bang Theory was a worldwide-hit and managed to last for 12 seasons and produce more than 200 episodes, it's widely regarded that season 8 was the beginning of the end for the CBS comedy.
Season 7 was the last year that Jim Parsons got nominated for an Emmy for his role as Sheldon Cooper, as well as it being the last season the show itself would get nominated for Best Comedy. But as always season 8 still managed to deliver some hilarious episodes for The Big Bang Theory fans (despite Penny's haircut).
10 The Septum Deviation, Episode 9 (7.5)
One of Sheldon's traits that was actually admirable (instead of annoying) was how fiercely loyal he was to his friends and how much he truly cared for them.
That's why during this episode when Leonard schedules a routine surgery to fix his deviated septum, Sheldon freaks out and starts bringing up all of the possible ways the surgery could go wrong in order to coax Leonard out of going through with the procedure. Meanwhile, Raj has to deal with a full-plate of family-drama when his parents call him and tell him they're getting divorced.
9 The Junior Professor Solution, Episode 2 (7.6)
Season 7 ended with Sheldon being told that he couldn't switch his field of study at the university, resulting in him having a nervous breakdown and fleeing to roam the country. When he returns to work in this episode, he's informed that the university will allow him to change his field of study - provided he becomes a junior professor and teach a class.
Unfortunately, nobody signs up since they know Sheldon is the teacher but Howard decides that he'll take the class just to prove to Sheldon that he's smart enough too. Unfortunately, Howard has to drop the class as Sheldon essentially annoys him out of it.
8 The Colonization Application, Episode 17 (7.6)
It's been known for quite some time that a team is attempting to colonize Mars and that they held open applications to anybody who would be willing to go. So, obviously, Sheldon Cooper decided to be one of those applicants.
Unfortunately, he decided to share this information with Amy at the exact moment they were buying a turtle together and the revelation that Sheldon wants to leave for another planet hurts Amy deeply. Sheldon eventually apologizes when he sees how much he has hurt Amy, but then he makes amends by asking Amy to fill out an application and come to Mars with him should they be chosen.
7 The Skywalker Incursion, Episode 19 (7.6)
The show about nerds and geeks had made countless references to the Star Wars franchise throughout the decade they had been on the air, so it was only natural that when Sheldon and Leonard were driving by Skywalker Ranch (the headquarters for director George Lucas) they tried to stop and get in.
However, Sheldon gets star-struck just by getting to the gate and he jumps the fence, resulting in him getting tazed and then detained by security.
6 The Misinterpretation Agitation, Episode 7 (7.8)
Penny had finally decided to stop pursuing her dream of being an actress and chose to start selling pharmaceuticals at Bernadette's company instead, which apparently meant she would flirt with her clients from time to time.
When a particular doctor becomes infatuated with her and shows up at her apartment with flowers, the gang has to inform him that Leonard and Penny are engaged. However, it turns out the doctor is a celebrity urinary specialist as well as a huge nerd and has a gigantic collection of geeky movie/tv/comic-book memorabilia and he invites the guys over to see it all.
5 The Intimacy Acceleration, Episode 16 (7.9)
Penny and Sheldon's relationship was one of the best arcs of the entire series, beginning with Penny thinking Sheldon was irritating and confusing while Sheldon barely qualified Penny as an acquaintance. But after eight seasons, the two had become as close as siblings and decided to partake in an experiment that was designed to make people fall in love with one another (they do it in order to debunk the test).
Once the experiment is over, the two agree that they're not in love, but they do admit that the two seem much more aware of how much they care for one another. This was a really sweet moment.
4 The Prom Equivalency, Episode 8 (8.0)
Honestly, did anyone actually have a good prom? The gang decides to recreate a dance with a "prom" theme in order to make up for the fact that none of them enjoyed theirs. Unfortunately, Sheldon thinks that the intimate event will make Amy want to move things forward in their relationship (physically) and he's still not ready for that so he panics.
When Amy comes to comfort him, she informs him that she has no expectations for the night and only wants to have a good time with him - only for Sheldon to tell Amy that he loves her for the very first time.
3 The Commitment Determination, Episode 24 (8.0)
Talk about a cliffhanger(s). The season 8 finale had two equally interesting plot-lines, the first following Leonard and Penny and their decision to spontaneously drive to Vegas and get married. Unfortunately, on the drive there, a guilt-ridden Leonard reveals that he cheated on Penny when he went on his trip to the North Sea.
Penny is clearly upset, but she decides she still wants to get married. Meanwhile, Amy finally gives up on making Sheldon want to have an intimate relationship with her and she breaks up with him... only for Sheldon to shock the audience by pulling out a wedding ring and revealing that he was going to propose to Amy.
2 The Troll Manifestation, Episode 14 (8.1)
When Leonard and Sheldon come up with a scientific breakthrough and publish their work, it's widely regarded as brilliant and highly promising - except for one person who belittles the theory and tells the two scientists that they're frauds and should be ashamed.
Irritated by the comments, Leonard and Sheldon eventually confront the anonymous troll - only for Dr. Stephen Hawking to be revealed as the culprit, whereupon he admits that he actually finds Sheldon and Leonard's theory quite intriguing and was simply bored and trying to get a rise out of them.
1 The Comic Book Store Regeneration, Episode 15 (8.1)
This was a heart-breaker. The episode revolves around the premise that Amy helps a rival scientist in his string theory research and Sheldon feels betrayed since Amy never offered to help him when he was working on string theory. Meanwhile, the rest of the gang helps Stuart restock his newly-finished comic-book store after it got burned down at the end of season 7.
Tragically, at the end of the episode, the entire gang is hanging out at the store when Howard gets a call from his aunt in Florida... and finds out that his mother passed away. R.I.P. Mrs. Wolowitz.
