A recent deep dive has shared details on three of the missions players can look forward to in the story campaign of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The newest installment of the iconic annual first person shooter franchise will be released on November 13th, less than two weeks away. The game is a hotly anticipated title for a lot of reasons, and that's made very clear by the fact that the game's beta version was the most downloaded in the history of the series.
Developer Treyarch has put in a lot of work to ensure that Black Ops Cold War stands apart from its recent predecessors. A lot of that work has gone into the single player campaign, which has historically not been the primary focus of the franchise. Black Ops Cold War is a direct sequel to the last game in the Black Ops sub-series, and it brings fan-favorite characters from that older game into the mounting nuclear tension of the Cold War. Treyarch is going to considerable lengths to make this setting feel authentic, and has even inserted Ronald Reagan himself, much to the disappointment of fans who revile the controversial policies he made during his time in office.
Fortunately, there are more reasons to play the campaign than simply meeting Ronald Reagan. The Call of Duty blog proved that earlier today by offering fans a taste of three of the missions they can experience in Black Ops Cold War. The first mission, "Nowhere Left To Run," opens the campaign in a seedy Amsterdam bar that quickly leads to a rooftop chase and a showdown at an airfield with a remote control car loaded with explosives. The developer intends for this mission to pay homage to previous Black Ops action without alienating new fans. The next mission, "Fracture Jaw," takes the form of one character's Vietnam flashback, recounting his first encounter with the main antagonist of the game, Soviet agent Perseus. "Fracture Jaw" is one of many Vietnam flashback missions players will experience throughout the game; a later flashback is "easily the most unique mission we’ve ever made," according to Dan Vondrak, senior creative director at Raven Software. The third mission that was showed off was Desperate Measures, which shakes up the game's FPS gunplay with an undercover stealth mission in the headquarters of the KGB. Players will have free reign to talk to KGB agents and gather information before weapons get drawn.
The story mode isn't the only thing getting focus in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Players have already experienced what the new game's multiplayer will be like thanks to the aforementioned beta. The zombies mode is getting shaken up as well; recent trailers have revealed a return to a classic map with some brand new, outlandish weaponry. There's clearly a lot to look forward to in the new game, aside from just the unconventional setting.
The Call of Duty series has been around a long time, and fans have seen a lot of new features and game modes added and tweaked over the years. It won't be long before Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War comes out and players can see just how well it stacks up to its forebears. If this deep dive is any indication, the developers have big things in store to make sure that it's a worthy entry.
