Two And A Half Men: 5 Times Jake Was An Overrated Character (& 5 He Was Underrated)

Two and a Half Men experienced many upheavals, including losing one of their main actors, Charlie Sheen. However, because of its heartwarming comedy, character dynamics, and relatable stories, it lasted for twelve seasons. Many viewers talk about the two "men" in the Harper household, but the resident "half-man", Jake Harper, doesn't get as much attention.

Although Jake can be characterized for his lack of smarts and is easily influenced, he proves himself to be kind, emotional, and lovable. And no one can accuse him of not undergoing any character development. Despite his best efforts, though, he is far from perfect.

10 Overrated: Unnecessarily Comments On Women's Bodies

Unfortunately for Jake, when living under the same roof as his uncle Charlie, some of the latter's influence is bound to rub off on him. In the show's third season, Jake is suspended for mocking a bigger breasted girl in his class.

Jake doesn't help his case by refusing to take responsibility for his actions and only regretting the fact that he'd signed the picture. Although Jake isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, it doesn't excuse his actions.

9 Underrated: Reaction After Dumping By Celeste

Jake has more than once shown the capability to feel remorse and be emotional. One example is with his first serious girlfriend, Celeste. Although the relationship is revealed to be less than healthy, Jake still lets his uncle convince him to cheat on her.

Celeste discovers the act and subsequently breaks up with him. Jake goes through numerous attempts to get her back, but she refuses. He falls into a depression afterward, demonstrating that he is more in tune with his emotions than most would believe.

8 Overrated: Refuses To Go To A Movie With His Father

By season 5, Jake has started junior high school and continuously deflects Alan's attempts to bond with him, including going to a movie. When Alan finally confronts Jake about how he will go to the movies with anyone except him, Jake replies with "I wouldn't go with Hitler".

Understandably, Jake wants to start branching away from his father to gain his independence. However, given how often Alan has bent over backward for Jake, it's still a hurtful action on Jake's part.

7 Underrated: His Love For His Father

In the first season, when it is revealed that Alan and Judith aren't getting back together, he comforts his dad about the whole situation, telling him that it's ok. While not fully understanding the emotional impact of the divorce, he understands what his father is going through.

During season 10, Jake even says out loud that he loves his father and that he wouldn't want anyone else to take his place. Despite how dismissive Jake is of his father's efforts, he does appreciate all that Alan does for him.

6 Overrated: His Friendship With Eldridge McElroy

Jake hasn't been shown having many friends throughout the series until he meets Eldridge McElroy in season 7. Eldridge is shown as not having a good opinion of his parents and not having many ambitions in life.

Eldridge is not the best influence on Jake and frequently gets him in trouble, including with underaged drinking and sneaking out. As great as it is that Jake has made a close friend, how easily he lets that friend influence him isn't great.

5 Underrated: Wants A Serious Relationship

At the beginning of season 10, Jake is introduced to Walden's friend's daughter, Missi. He immediately falls for her and begins an affair with her, causing him to unexpectedly leave the army to be with her.

After he admits his feelings for her, she convinces him to go back, as she is not ready for a serious relationship. This is one of many examples of Jake being ready to drop everything and commit to those that he cares about.

4 Overrated: Jake Almost Drops Out Of High School

Even after Charlie's death, Jake has to deal with the influence of Walden Schmidt. Walden tells Jake that he never fully completed his education and earned his first million by age 19 after starting an internet business. This gives Jake the idea to drop out of school.

Jake has never proven to be the most adept at his studies, but he is old enough at this point in the series to understand that dropping out of high school is not the best choice.

3 Underrated: Understands More Than He Lets On

While Jake may not be book smart, there is still hope for him. In season 3, Jake beings experiencing girl troubles after he gets mixed messages from a girl in his class over a cupcake that she gave him. Through a convoluted metaphor involving said cupcakes, Charlie explains to him that he is not obligated to reciprocate the attraction.

When Alan asks them what they are talking about, Jake makes it very clear that he understands that metaphor's subtext. While not the prime example of life lessons, it is comforting to know that Jake can read between the lines.

2 Overrated: Jake Dates A 36-Year Old Woman

In season 10, Jake enters into a questionable relationship. The questionable aspect is that his partner, Tammy, is 36 years old, with three children (one of which is older than Jake). To make matters worst, the pair almost elope.

Although Jake is looking for a serious relationship at this point, going for a woman that much older than him seems to come out of desperation. His immaturity is further demonstrated when he cheats on Tammy with her daughter.

1 Underrated: Learns From Those Around Him

Jake has had many conflicting influences in his life, from Alan trying got keep him on the straight and narrow, to Charlie trying to steer him towards being a permanent bachelor. However, that does not mean that Jake hasn't learned what he wants for himself.

After Charlie's death, Jake admits to his father that, when he reaches his late uncle's age, he wants to be married with a family because it was obvious to him how lonely and sad Charlie had been.
