WARNING! Spoilers for The Craft: Legacy ahead.
Twenty-four years after the release of The Craft in 1996, Blumhouse released the official sequel to the cult classic movie, The Craft: Legacy, but will The Craft 3 happen, and if it does, when will it release? It was originally speculated that Zoe Lister-Jones's movie would be a soft sequel, and only reveal a subtle connection between the first coven and the brand new one. When the first trailer for The Craft: Legacy premiered, it revealed that there would be a much bigger connection than initially alluded to with the appearance of Fairuza Balk's Nancy Downs, who is related to a new witch. With her story line merging with the sequel's, it brings to question, will The Craft 3 happen?
The Craft: Legacy stars Cailee Spaeny as Lily, the newest witch in town whose past is just as mysterious as her new stepfather's, portrayed by The X-Files' David Duchovny. When she joins her fellow witches, Tabby (Lovie Simone), Lourdes (Zoey Luna), and Frankie (Gideon Adlon), her powers begin to manifest at an alarming rate. The sequel is almost a direct mirroring of the events that took place in 1996's The Craft. They have the same basic premise of a new witch coming to town, befriending a trio looking for their fourth, and then disaster commences. Lister-Jones's has a much happier ending than the original, but it also includes the major reveal that Nancy Downs is Lily's mother, but her father's identity is still unknown.
With so many questions left unanswered by the end of The Craft: Legacy, there are several avenues that a potential The Craft 3 movie could go. While another movie has not been officially announced, it's entirely plausible that Blumhouse Productions will enlist Lister-Jones in making a follow-up to her take on The Craft. Here's everything we know so far about The Craft 3.
Due to the fact that it has not been given the green light by the production studio, the release date for The Craft 3 is unknown. It is likely that, if the movie is made, it will be released during the month of October, just in time for Halloween. The COVID-19 pandemic has added an extra hurdle to filming and developing brand new movies; as a result, The Craft 3 could release in 2022 or even 2023.
The Craft 3 will likely bring back all four of the original witches from The Craft: Legacy and perhaps even ones from the 1996 movie. It's unlikely that they would change the coven due to their importance to the 2020 movie. Lily's mother is Nancy Downs, meaning Fairuza Balk will play a pivotal role in a follow-up to The Craft: Legacy. It is unlikely that David Duchovny will return as a main cast member based on his fate, but he could be used as a plot device in flashbacks. As of now, there are no official cast announcements, but it can be assumed that the foursome will return.
The major reveal at the end of The Craft: Legacy left many wondering what would happen with Nancy and Lily in the future of the movie franchise. Undoubtedly, The Craft 3 will have to answer several questions about who Lily's father is, who assaulted Nancy, and why she has been in a facility since the end of the 1996 movie. Nancy is able to pass down her magical gifts to her children, but what could it mean for her and the powers gifted to her by Manon? The plot of a third movie will likely focus on all of these unanswered questions, and have Lily rise with a positive influence on her powers, though there is always potential for her to go to the dark side in a future installment of The Craft franchise.
