The Bachelorette: Who Is Guest Comedian Margaret Cho?

This week’s episode of The Bachelorette welcomes a special guest to the La Quinta bubble. Comedian Margaret Cho will be featured on a group date where the guys have the opportunity to roast each other. What is there to know about the award-winning comedian?

This season of The Bachelorette looks a little different than its predecessors. Rather than starting off in the mansion and jet-setting to exotics locations as the episodes go on, this season was filmed entirely in one spot. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe, Bachelorette producers decided to create their own COVID-free bubble at La Quinta Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, California. Since contestants didn't interact with the outside world, most fans assumed special guests would also be absent from this season. But in only the third episode, one lucky comedian managed to break through the bubble to wow contestants and fans with her skills.

Margaret Cho is no newbie to the comedy game. She began performing stand-up when she was just 16 years old. Soon after her career launched, she won a contest to open for Jerry Seinfeld. A couple of years later, she moved to Los Angeles to perform stand-up full time. It seems her funny bone was passed down from her dad. He wrote joke books in Korean. Margaret’s mother was originally supposed to be in an arranged marriage in accordance with Korean tradition, but balked at the expectation when she fell for Margaret’s dad. Sadly, Margaret was bullied heavily as a child. This may have been one of the factors that drove her towards comedy. She often incorporates her experiences into her stand-up. IMDB describes her as a sort of “patron-saint” for outsiders. Her non-conformity led her to land the ABC sitcom, All American Girl. Producers and network executives wanted Margaret to tone down her personality to be more palatable for the show, which brought up unresolved feelings about her experiences with bullying. Still, Margaret seems determined to be comfortable in her own skin, as shown by the Instagram post below:

There’s a reason Margaret was chosen to appear on The Bachelorette. Not only is she extremely talented, but she is also highly acclaimed. Margaret was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Kim Jong II on 30 Rock. This wasn’t her only award. The feature film for her off-Broadway one-woman show, I’m the One That I Want, broke records for concert films in 1999. Now, she stars in the Lifetime comedy/drama series, Drop Dead Diva. Margaret has also been successful in the music industry. The CD recording for her 2003 tour, Revolution, was nominated for a Grammy for Comedy Album of the Year. In 2010, she was the first woman to release a musical comedy album. The record, Cho Dependent, garnered her a second Grammy nomination for Comedy Album of the Year. The concert film for Cho Dependent was her sixth live concert film.

As a Korean American member of the LGBTQ community, Margaret has always used her platform to advocate for marginalized groups. For example, when competing on season 11 of Dancing With the Stars, Margaret made headlines for wearing a rainbow dress during one of her performances. She’s active in many social justice campaigns and has been recognized by various groups for her dedication to social justice causes.
