Even though hundreds of film productions have been delayed because of Covid-19, the future is looking good for sci-fi movies. The most anticipated genre releases for 2020 and 2021 range from creature features starring Godzilla and King Kong to cerebral and dark takes on the assassin trope.

Fans of the genre, whether they prefer heady, surreal tales or big-budget ventures, won't be disappointed by what's to come. While the release dates for some of the films on this list are up in the air, others are set – for now – to debut on specific days in whatever standard and drive-in theaters are open.

10 Possessor

Brandon Cronenberg's nightmarish sci-fi assassin thriller Possessor will receive a limited release on October 2, 2020. This highly anticipated feature from the son of David Cronenberg stars Andrea Riseborough as a corporate hitman who assumes her victim's bodies through a special brain-implant technology.

Christopher Abbott plays the slayer for hire's latest target, but the mission goes awry when her identity begins to meld with his. This provocative and original film has already received wide praise from critics.

9 The Eternals

2021's The Eternals picks up where Avengers: Endgame leaves off, as the eponymous alien gang comes together to protect humanity from the Deviants. The Eternals, who have secretly been living on Earth for 7,000 years, are being cast as a diverse group of humanoids MCU fans are chomping at the bit to see on the big screen.

What's most exciting about The Eternals is who will bring these comic book characters to life. Actors ranging from Angelina Jolie to Kumail Nanjiani to Brian Tyree Henry to Kit Harrington are on board to play this latest wave of superheroes.

8 Dune

Frank Herbert's classic novel about dynastic cosmic societies vying for power in the far future is considered an impossible story to bring to the big screen. David Lynch tried and failed; so did Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Now it's up to French director Denis Villeneuve to bring the epic Dune to life, and the first of a two-part adaptation will reach theatres on December 18, 2020. With a cast like Oscar Isaac, Timothée Chalamet, and Josh Brolin, fans are hopeful they won't be disappointed.

7 Chaos Walking

This adaptation of Patrick Ness's young adult dystopian novels has been in development for quite some time, and it will finally see the light of day on January 22, 2021. Tom Holland stars as Todd Hewitt, a young man living in a colony that contains no female members.

Hewitt was raised to believe all women were killed by a pathogen that also granted men the ability to hear all human and animal thoughts. One day, Hewitt stumbles upon a mysterious woman in the woods, and the two venture to discover the true nature of their world.

6 Stowaway

No release date is set for this deep space thriller starring Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette. As the crew of a spaceship heads toward Mars, they discover a stowaway on board who compromises the safety of their mission.

Since the astronauts are too far away from Earth to turn back, they must make a tough choice between sharing their limited resources and caring for the additional body. Daniel Dae Kim plays the ship's biologist, who functions as the voice of dissent amongst the group of intergalactic explorers.

5 Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Tom Hardy will return in 2021 as Venom in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Originally scheduled to be released in October 2020, Sony Pictures Releasing has delayed the opening date to June 25 of next year.

This sequel to 2018's Venom is directed by Andy Serkis, and it co-stars Woody Harrelson and Michelle Williams. Fans hope to see more screentime dedicated to the relationship between Hardy's character Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote Venom that takes over his body and bestows him with special abilities.

4 Synchronic

Justin Morehead and Aaron Benson have made a name for themselves as top-notch sci-fi directors who don't need a lot of money to make compelling features. Their latest venture, Synchronic, debuted at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, and it will finally make it to mainstream theatres on October 25, 2020.

Synchronic stars Jamie Dornan and Anthony Mackie as paramedics in New Orleans whose works causes them to encounter a designer drug known as Synchronic. The two men go on a wild, time-traveling journey that comes with many consequences and problems.

3 After Yang

Production company A24 is behind this sci-fi film from the experimental director Kogonada. After Yang stars Colin Farrell as a father who purchases a robotic child to serve as a live-in babysitter for his daughter.

When the robot becomes irresponsible, Farrell's character Jake does what he can to save his adopted AI. After Yang is currently scheduled for a 2021 release date.

2 Godzilla Vs. Kong

Adam Wingard has gone from directly independent horror films like You're Next to big-budget monster movies like the forthcoming Godzilla Vs. Kong. A sequel to Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island, it is the fourth movie to feature both of these gargantuan creatures.

Godzilla Vs. Kong will be released on May 21, 2020, after being delayed because of Covid-19. This ensemble sci-fi action flick stars Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry – to name a few.

1 Free Guy

Ryan Reynolds's Free Guy will finally arrive in theatres on December 11, 2020. This sci-fi video game spoof sees Reynolds cast as a background character in an open-world RPG called Free City.

A few programmers insert a new code into the game that makes Reynolds's character Guy aware of his simulated status. Guy then goes on a mission to become the game's hero and keep his universe from being shuttered by developers.
