The Matrix 4 will see actor Daniel Bernhardt reprise his role as Agent Johnson from 2003's The Matrix Reloaded. Directed by Lana Wachowski, the fourth film in the franchise will also have Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith return in starring roles. Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving are not expected to reprise their respective parts as Morpheus and Agent Smith. Production on The Matrix 4, set after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, recently resumed after it was shut down due to the pandemic. The film is set for an April 1, 2021 release date
Deadline reports that Bernhardt will return as Agent Johnson. Johnson was first introduced in The Matrix Reloaded, where he faced off in epic fight scenes against Reeves' Neo and Fishburne's Morpheus. The character only appeared in the one movie and was last seen fighting Ghost and Niobe.
Bernhardt, a veteran actor, trained martial artist, and accomplished stuntman, has appeared in a number of high-profile films since his role as Agent Johnson in The Matrix Reloaded. His credits include The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, John Wick, Logan, and Birds of Prey. His casting in The Matrix 4 indicates that computer programs disguised as government agents remain a threat to Neo and his allies.
Reports of The Matrix 4's development began in March 2017. It was confirmed in August 2019 and production began in February 2020. Director Lana Wachowski co-wrote the screenplay with authors Aleksander Hemon (The Lazarus Project) and David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas). The exact plot of The Matrix 4 is unknown at this point but there are several theories suggesting audiences are in for unexpected twists and turns. In addition to Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith, the film will feature Neil Patrick Harris, Priyank Chopra, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Jonathan Groff.
