Here's The Best TV Shows And Movies Coming To Netflix In September

Summer is nearly over… and that means Pumpkin Spice Lattes, cosy sweaters, complaining about it being too cold (now that it’s no longer too hot), and lots of excuses to stay indoors and binge watch shows and movies on Netflix.

Of course, if you have been a dedicated binger all through the summer, you may need something new to watch, and Netflix is happy to oblige with plenty of new original series, Netflix films, and some old favorites this month.

There really is something for everyone. Possibly too much -

15. Groundhog Day

Some classic Bill Murray comedy is hitting the streaming service on the first of the month with Groundhog Day. This nineties comedy classic takes place over a single day… but a day that keeps repeating, time and time again! Only one weatherman is aware of the constant time loop in this romantic comedy, however. A must for classic rom-com fans who want something a little silly.

Arriving: September 1

14. Pearl Harbor

Enjoy some old-school Ben Affleck goodness with this period romance set during World War II. A love triangle against the backdrop of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor makes for an intense drama, but be warned: this is not a short movie. At just over three hours, Pearl Harbor is a movie for one of those days where you don’t intend to leave the house at all.

13. The Breakfast Club

Get your John Hughes on with The Breakfast Club, the iconic ‘80s movie that turned a Saturday detention into a journey of discovery. You’ll already know half the lines (and have probably quoted it at least once this year so far), you know exactly what to expect as the secrets of a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal all start to come out, but that doesn’t mean that a re-watch isn’t worth every minute.

12. The Emperor’s New Groove

This underappreciated Disney movie is a great choice for the whole family, but it’s not just the kids who will enjoy it. The story of a spoiled ruler who gets turned into a llama, and has to find his way home and defeat a sorceress with the help of a peasant, The Emperor’s New Groove is irreverent, breaks the fourth wall, and is packed with catchy tunes and quotable lines.

Arriving: September 2

11. Black Panther

Undoubtedly the biggest addition to the Netflix catalog this month is Marvel’s Black Panther. This addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was one of the biggest hits of the year, and with good reason. It features all the usual superhero movie goodness, with great fight scenes and a new superhero on the rise, but it also opens up the landscape of Wakanda and brings black culture into the heart of the MCU.

Arriving: September 4

10. Iron Fist (Season 2)

Another Marvel addition to the streaming service this month is the second season of Iron Fist, part of the Marvel/Netflix Defenders series. Although the first season was definitely controversial and garnered plenty of criticism, fans can hope that the follow up is where Danny Rand (Finn Jones) really comes into his own and elevates Iron Fist to the level of the other shows in this universe.

Arriving: September 7

9. Sierra Burgess Is A Loser

Fans of Barb from Stranger Things will be thrilled to hear that actress Shannon Purser stars in this Netflix Original movie about teenage crushes and high school drama. Purser is the titular Sierra Burgess, an intelligent teen who seems to be utterly unconcerned about her popularity (or lack thereof)… but when she starts to text a boy who thinks she is one of the cool girls, she needs to reach out to the cheerleaders for help - and they both start to learn a little about how similar they really are.

Arriving: September 7

8. The Most Assassinated Woman In The World

For movie fans who don’t mind subtitles, check out The Most Assassinated Woman In The World this September. From director Franck Ribiere, this film festival offering is set in Paris in the 1930s at the infamous Theatre Grand Guignol, and is noteworthy for it naturalistic horror performance from star Paula Maxa (Anna Mouglalis) - a woman who is murdered nightly on stage, and hides secrets of her own.

7. Bleach

Another live-action anime adaptation hits Netflix this month with Bleach. The film which made its Japanese debut earlier this year, but is only now hitting North America. While a lot of recent anime adaptations have been poorly received (see: Death Note), this take on the story of a high schooler turned soul reaper seems like it might be one to break that pattern, and is definitely worth a shot for still-hopeful anime fans.

Arriving: September 14

6. Bojack Horseman (Season 5)

Ready for some dark humor and a talking horse? Of course you are! The fifth season of Bojack Horseman comes to Netflix mid-month, promising lots more absurdity and gut-wrenchingly honest comedy about life, love and the cult of celebrity. Bojack Horseman is unlike any other adult animation, and the fifth season promises to continue to mix sadness and hilarity in equal measure.

Arriving: September 14

5. The Land Of Steady Habits

The Land of Steady Habits premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, ahead of the September 14 release date on Netflix - and the trailer looks like it’s going to be everything you'd expect from a Nicole Holofcener film. Centering on a man who finds himself feeling trapped in his affluent life, the film looks at what happens when Anders leaves his wife, his job and his life behind, and tries to find the freedom that he thinks he lacks.

Arriving: September 14

4. Role Models

Ten years ago, before Paul Rudd was Ant-Man, he was the star of this surprisingly sweet comedy about two energy drink reps who are sentenced to community service in a Big Brother program. Cynical, irresponsible, and a little bit lost, these friends will start to learn a whole lot about themselves when they are forced to take on ‘difficult’ kids - who may have a thing or two to teach them.

Arriving: September 16

3. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

For those superhero fans who will have watched Black Panther twenty times over since the start of September, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World may be the antidote. The second superhero movie to be added to the Netflix catalog this round, Edgar Wright's video-game inspired flick is all about a musician’s attempts to win the girl by defeating her evil exes - and the unique style made it an instant cult classic.

Arriving: September 16

2. Nappily Ever After

A Netflix Original based on the novel of the same name, Nappily Ever After follows the life of the uber-perfect Violet Jones (Sanaa Lathan), a woman who makes sure that everything (from her job to her relationship) is as perfect as her hair. However, when everything starts to go wrong, her hair becomes a metaphor for her search for herself as she hacks it all off and starts again, finding something a little more authentically "her".

Arriving: September 21

1. A Wrinkle In Time

Another 2018 Disney movie that hits Netflix in time for fall is A Wrinkle In Time, a film that is undeniably visually stunning, but that certainly falls down in other areas. The less than glowing reviews may have been a reason to give this one a miss in cinemas, but now that it’s on Netflix, sit back and enjoy Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of the classic children’s novel.
