Actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has revealed that he never thought Jamie Lannister would survive until Game of Thrones season 8. Like most characters on the show, Jamie went through quite a transformation throughout the series. His character in recent seasons has turned from an arrogant and rude leader into someone with much more heroic qualities.
Game of Thrones started in 2011 on HBO, and is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. The series quickly grew a huge fan base, and became an extremely profitable show for HBO. The final season of Game of Thrones is looking to be one of the most anticipated television events in recent years. It may be disappointing that season 8 of Game of Thrones will only have six episodes, but some of those episodes are thought to have feature-length runtimes. Details on the final season are being kept tightly under wraps, especially because of the HBO hack during season 7 that resulted in scripts and personal information being leaked online. Many people are wondering who lives or dies in season 8, and now Coster-Waldau has revealed that he thought his character was going to die a lot earlier on in the show.

Recently, Coster-Waldau talked with The Huffington Post about his involvement in season 8 and his thoughts on filming the final season of the show. When talking about his character making it to the final season, Coster-Waldau commented. "I know! It was a surprise. God, every time we got a new script I thought, “OK, this is probably going to be the one.” But no. The Lannister kids made it to the end.". Coster-Waldau also commented that the show comes to a satisfying conclusion but it was nonetheless a bitter sweet moment, since it meant he would be saying goodbye to the Jamie Lannister character. Coster-Waldau even commented, "I have to admit that right when they said, “This is a series wrap for Nikolaj,” there might have been a tiny bit of moisture in the air, just around my eyes. [Laughs] But that was it, that was it.".
Game of Thrones is notorious for killing off main characters just when fans begin to like them. While not very many people can say that they liked Jamie at the beginning of the show, he has since transformed into someone who has been seen as more humble and understanding, especially after his hand was chopped off. While the interview obviously doesn't reveal if Jamie lives or dies by the conclusion of season 8, there's an equal chance that he could be one of the survivors or one of the main characters who perish.
Even though Coster-Waldau and his costars have already wrapped filming on the final season, season 8 still won't be premiering until 2019. That being said, HBO isn't ready to let go of Game of Thrones just yet, since they're already working on a spinoff set thousands of years before the events of the current show. While it's very unlikely that popular characters like Jamie will appear in the spinoff, given its time period, fans can look forward to seeing how his story ends when Game of Thrones wraps up sometime in summer 2019.
