Comic book fans can be a real tough crowd. Many want live action adaptations of their favorite comic book characters to be as accurate as possible.
However, sometimes a fresh take on an old character can become so popular that comic books are revised to include the actor's portrayal, which then it becomes canon.
It's hard to please all fans, as many of them have different views about certain characters.
Will they love a risky new hero or will they boo a new variation of a villain and walk out of the theater?
With so many reboots, sequels, as well as the creation of an entire extended movie universe, DC has given us lots of character variations to compare.
Heated debates can often arise, as the actors placed in these iconic roles either nail their characters' appearances or veer off in entirely new directions.
Which Batman was closest to the books? Whose Joker was the most accurate? Did Michelle Pfeiffer or Anne Hathaway look most like the traditional Selina Kyle? Also, just how perfect is Gal Gadot as Diana, Princess of the Amazons?
We'll answer all of this and more with 10 DC Actors Who Look Nothing Like Their Characters (And 10 Who Are Spot On).
20 Looks Nothing like - Christian Bale as Batman
Christian Bale was not a bad Batman. Yes, his Batman Voice was widely mocked, but it's also become iconic and many critics have begun to agree with the unique acting choice.
However, he was also not your typical, comic book Batman. Bats is big, bulky, and gruff - and, most importantly, he has that strong, square jaw. The Dark Knight's chin may be one of his most defining features.
Bale made an excellent Bruce Wayne, and his acting style behind the mask was certainly memorable, but he just didn't look the part.
As seen in the photo above, his chin is not quite what we've seen in the comics or even Batman: The Animated Series.
While he's definitely an acting powerhouse, his physique is much smaller than what we've come to expect from the Defender of Gotham.
19 Spot On - Henry Cavill as Superman
Goofy CGI mustache-removal aside, Henry Cavill is the perfect choice for Superman. He has a baby face, a dimpled chin, and curly black hair.
Cavill even checks the clear blue eyes column nicely. He's quite literally the comic book Superman come to life.
While many believe that Cavill's acting has been overall boring, it may be a little bit more fair to chalk this up to the source material.
Supes has always been the upstanding, moralistic, and serious hero - one who carries himself like he's always on the job, and Cavill certainly portrays him as such.
This is definitely one case where DC nailed the casting perfectly.
18 Looks Nothing like - Jack Nicholson as The Joker
Jack Nicholson's Joker makeup was very accurate to the comics, and so was his wild purple and green suit.
However, it's still hard to see anyone other than Jack Nicholson when looking at his Tim Burton's Batman character.
The thin, arched eyebrows and long chin should feel right at home with the Joker's character. However, even with such an exaggerated smile, Nicholson still dominates the scene as himself.
He doesn't really melt into the character.
There's nothing wrong with Nicholson as an actor, he's been a mainstay in Hollywood for a reason, but talent doesn't always make an actor a perfect fit. Sometimes it only makes it more difficult to suspend the viewer's disbelief.
17 Spot On - Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is exotic, graceful, fierce, and commanding. These are also all descriptions that could perfectly be applied to the actress who plays her, Gal Gadot.
Diana, Princess of the Amazons is tall, dark-eyed, and has long wavy dark hair in the comics. Gadot fits every one of these attributes.
However, more than that, Gadot carries herself with graciousness and poise, which are other attributes that could be attributed to Wonder Woman found in the comics.
Gadot also has the ability to look as though she is dancing in the middle of her fighting scenes. Her grace extends itself to even the most action-heavy of sequences, locking in her princess status.
DC fans may have waited decades to finally see a big screen version of Diana Prince, but now that she's here, it was well worth the wait.
16 Looks Nothing like - Michelle Pfeiffer as Cat Woman
Michelle Pfeiffer was a great Catwoman. This is just a fact. Her performance as the slinky, lonely, and emotionally hardened yet incredibly vulnerable Selina Kyle cast a long shadow that DC superheroines (and villains) had a hard time living up to.
However, if we're being perfectly honest, she didn't look very much like her comic counterpart.
Traditionally, Kyle has a button nose, almond-shaped eyes, and dark hair, which is often cropped short.
Batman: The Animated Series did feature a blonde Kyle more in line with Pfeiffer's rendition, but the iteration used most often is quite the opposite of Pfeiffer.
While her version was fun to watch, the performance failed to capture Catwoman's ongoing struggles with morality.
15 Spot On - Ben Affleck as Batman
Believe it or not, but Ben Affleck is the perfect Batman. He's older, he's grizzled, and tired of this job. He's also got that thousand yard stare down pat.
Even more, he has that iconic Batman chin.
However, Affleck being cast as the Dark Knight was not a popular decision. Many fans of the Bat were hesitant about the news and were not afraid to say so.
Kevin Smith has recently come out publicly defending his performance - and, honestly, there wasn't anything wrong with it.
Affleck was not as tough and action-oriented as Christian Bale, but that's not what Batman v Superman was going for.
This is an older, jaded Batman who has seen some seen some stuff and would love to hang up his cape if he weren't so addicted to his alter ego.
14 Looks Nothing like - Ezra Miller as Barry Allen
Many fans of The CW's The Flash were disappointed to learn that Grant Gustin would not be given a shot to join the DCU in Justice League.
However, Ezra Miller's socially awkward portrayal of the Scarlet Speedster was a joy to watch. He was witty, funny, and viewers could really relate to his excitement over joining such an elite fighting squad.
However, for all of Miller's acting prowess, he didn't quite look like the Flash we've come to know in the comics.
He is a little more fit and has a larger nose and smaller chin than his comic book counterpart.
We still agree with his point of view on brunch, though.
13 Spot On - Ray Fisher as Cyborg
Odds are high that if you're a fan of DC's Cyborg, you're a fan of Teen Titans. The half-human, half-robot hero made a name for himself as the hilarious android with a heart of gold on the popular cartoon series.
His popularity left many hoping to see him on the big screen.
However, the live-action iteration of this fan-favorite character was quite different from his beloved animated portrayal.
Comic book Cyborg's origins are quite serious and depressing, as Justice League made it a point to convey.
It's hard to ignore that Ray Fisher looks exactly like his comic book counterpart. The two have a similar build and similar facial features.
Not to mention Fisher's ability to recreate the drama and pain that fuels this tragic character makes him entirely believable.
12 Looks Nothing like - Michael Keaton as Batman
Michael Keaton was, simply put, an odd choice to play Batman. There's nothing wrong with Keaton as an actor, but he simply didn't look the part.
He was smaller, not nearly as toned and muscled as the superhero would be, and he didn't quite convey the same level of seriousness and anguish as Christian Bale or Ben Affleck.
Keaton looks a little like your dad might look in a Batsuit, which could very well be why his rendition of the Dark Knight remains popular to this day.
Fans love to imagine themselves in their favorite superhero roles and Keaton's Batman is definitely the most relatable.
While this is an admirable quality, to be sure, it's still obvious that his portrayal of Batman isn't accurate to the comic books.
11 Spot On - Heath Ledger as The Joker
When we think of the Joker, one name comes to the forefront every time: Heath Ledger. Ledger's chaotic, captivating, and messy performance as Batman's nemesis forever changed superhero movies - and superhero movie villains, for that matter.
Though Ledger has essentially become synonymous with the role, he didn't exactly look the way most fans expected the comic book or animated version of the character to look.
Yet, the same year that The Dark Knight was released in theaters, a version of the Joker appeared in comics that looked awfully similar to Ledger.
This version had the same greasy, almost blonde hair, the creepy scars, and smudged eyeshadow - it was all there in Brian Azzarello's Joker.
10 Looks Nothing like - Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Lois Lane has had all manner of fashionable looks throughout the years, as she's always staying on top of the latest trends. From short, sassy bobs and long, wavy curls, she rocks whatever look she's given.
However, regardless of the style that she happens to be sporting at the moment, she will always be recognized and remembered for her jet black hair.
Amy Adams' sweet features and orange locks don't quite capture the Lois we know and love in the comics.
Making matters worse, Batman v Superman didn't really give Adams much to do, while Justice League provided her character with even less development.
The DCU's version of the character pretty much took away all of Lois' agency, relegating her to just another damsel in distress character.
9 Spot On - Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
Quite frankly, Margot Robbie looks exactly like Harley Quinn. Quinn is such a beloved character in the comics that it was important for DC get their portrayal of her right.
While some fans noticed her distinct lack of a Brooklyn accent, it's hard to argue with the spot-on visual results of this casting decision.
Robbie perfectly fits the role. She has Quinn's tiny nose, wide eyes, and athletic gymnast's physique. Also, most noticeably, Robbie totally nailed Quinn's huge grin.
Longtime fans of the "good girl psychiatrist gone bad" looked forward to seeing Harleen Quinzel on the big screen for decades before she finally made her debut in Suicide Squad.
Now, we can't help but hope that she's here to stay.
8 Looks nothing like - Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern
Ryan Reynolds is simply too much fun on-screen to be a believable Green Lantern. Too many comic book panels featuring this shiny green hero depics him scowling in a very serious manner.
Reynolds certainly looks like he's trying to replicate Hal Jordan's dour facial expression, but he still looks like he'd rather be playing a prank than saving the world.
Because of this, Reynolds is much better suited playing Marvel's Deadpool, the mischievous mercenary who sometimes dabbles in heroism.
With so much positive energy to share, Reynolds was definitely a better choice for the Merc with a Mouth.
7 Spot On - Billy Crudup as Henry Allen
There are probably as many variations on Henry Allen as there are multiverses, so it shouldn't have been hard for the DCU to find an actor to step into the shoes of the Flash's dad and depict the character accurately.
Thankfully, a decades-old version of Henry Allen looks a lot like Billy Crudup's Justice League iteration.
Crudup's tired eyes, wiry hair with streaks of gray, strong nose, and stubble are exact replicas of his comic book counterpart's appearance.
Also, naturally, Crudup portrays the same strong sense of sadness and love that Allen so obviously feels for his son, Barry Allen.
6 Looks Nothing like - Jared Leto as The Joker
Fans of Gotham's Clown Prince were worried the instant they saw Jared Leto's Joker costume. He looked like a modern punk. Quite frankly, he did not look at all like the Joker.
He was tall and thin, sure, but everything else was quite a change from the Joker we've all come to know in comic books.
His hair was too slick, his teeth too damaged, and his nose lacked the sharp, awkward point that made the comic book villain stand out.
The reception of this new Joker was decidedly mixed.
While some viewers were upset over the screen time that was given to Leto, others complained that he had not been used nearly enough.
5 Spot On - Tom Hardy as Bane
We'll be honest, the Bane voice was an interesting idea. It wasn't at all how Bane typically sounds, but it was certainly memorable.
However, vocals aside, Tom Hardy looked the part of the Man Who Broke the Bat.
Hardy bulked up to gain his wrestler's physique in The Dark Knight Rises.
Unfortunately, he actually did a lot of damage to his body in the process.
According to the actor, these muscle-bound action-packed roles are not a natural fit for his typically small physique. Hardy worried that his body would give out if he took on too many roles that required him to completely transform his body.
4 Looks Nothing like - Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze
Arnold Schwarzenegger is a big, hulking man with a lot of muscles and an athlete's presence. Mr. Freeze, believe it or not, was very much not like this in the comic books.
While some versions of Freeze's suit do depict muscles, they are often much smaller than the ones we see on Schwarzenegger's suit.
Mr. Freeze is quite sick, which means that he needs his freezing suit to keep him alive. Because of his weakened state, he is often portrayed as thin, almost skeletal, in the comics.
Schwarzenegger definitely did not fit this bill. However, his cool puns were still a lot of fun.
3 Spot On - Anne Hathaway as Catwoman
Fans of Catwoman were quite nervous about Anne Hathaway's casting in the iconic role. They felt that she was too nice and innocent to accurately play the part.
Most fans were also not at all that happy about her lack of cat ears. However, the cat ears were there, hidden inside her motorcycle goggles all along - and so was a perfectly replicated Selina Kyle.
Hathaway fits the vintage bombshell grace that Kyle so easily exudes.
Her small nose, dark hair, and quiet confidence match perfectly with Catwoman's comic book portrayal.
Not to mention Hathaway's expert performance as a woman struggling with her moral compass also added a lot to her perfomance.
2 Looks Nothing like - Jason Momoa as Aquaman
Jason Momoa has basically transformed the face of Aquaman. After his appearance in Justice League, he's often the first person who people think of when they hear the name "Aquaman."
His commanding portrayal as the sea king is a captivating one that is fun to watch. However, it's quite a departure from Arthur Curry's comic book version.
Typically, Aquaman has been portrayed as thin, blonde, and covered scales in the comics. However, Momoa is quite the opposite of this.
Justice League gives Aquaman a realistic reason for his scaly skin: tattoos. Though this is a creative way of representing his scales, it's still very different from what we see in the comics books.
The actor definitely has Curry's stone-faced stare down to a science, though.
1 Spot On - Danny Devito as Penguin
Comic book Penguin is not an easy look to pull off. Gotham's Oswald Cobblepot boasted a deeply wrinkled face, a double chin, and a long, thin, hooked nose. His eyes were dark and sunken, while his skin was a contrasting pale shade.
Naturally, makeup was required to help Danny Devito achieve this look for Batman Returns, but the finished result matched perfectly with this iconic character's typical portrayal in the comics.
Add to this Devito's crotchety, angry, revenge-filled yet lonely and broken emotional performance, and this casting decision couldn't have gone any better.
Whether you hated the final Penguin scene or not, it's hard to deny that Devito portrayed the character perfectly.
