Miss Sherlock Trailer: Holmes Is Reimagined In New HBO Asia Series

HBO delivers the first trailer for Miss Sherlock, a reimagining of the classic characters created by Sir Arthur Conan. On September 1, subscribers will be able to stream the first season of the HBO Asia series, to discover a new take on both Holmes and Watson with an International twist. It will see Miss Sherlock Holmes as she and her new friend Dr. Wato Tachibana make their way through some truly complex and unpredictable crimes in Japan.

The series stars Yuko Takeuchi as Holmes and Shihori Kanjiya as Dr. Tachibana. The two are the latest in a long line of actors take on the iconic roles, though this time they will deliver a pair of strong, crime-fighting women, instead of the usual dynamic. Adding to the series’ appeal is its setting in present-day Tokyo, which should make for an appealing change of pace for audiences used to seeing Holmes investigating crimes in England or, more recently, New York City.

The trailer for the series delivers a charming and funny update as well, with a tone that’s more playful than BBC’s popular Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The show’s nature also seems like it will distance it from CBS’s Elementary, which also sought to shake up the Holmes/Watson dynamic when it not only moved the action to the U.S., but also re-envisioned the Watson character with Lucy Liu in the role of the former surgeon and sober companion. In all, it looks like it will be a fun expansion of the Holmes persona.

Sherlock Holmes remains one of the most frequently adapted characters in popular culture, and for good reason. The detective has proven incredibly malleable, having been envisioned as everything from a proper English gentleman to a teen detective to an action hero played by Robert Downey Jr. And now, the character is taking on a new life as a British-born Japanese woman in modern day Tokyo. Given the sheer amount of adaptations that have made using Doyle’s most famous creation, it’s amazing how endlessly fascinating the character continues to be.

The launch of Miss Sherlock for U.S HBO subscribers is the latest in the premium channel’s efforts to bring more international shows to viewers. Not long ago, the channel brought over a number of series, including Wasteland, The Pact, The Teenage Psychic, and Halfworlds. As HBO scales up its content war with Netflix, expect more international series like these and Miss Sherlock to be available to all HBO subscribers.
