FX’s upcoming Mayans M.C. won’t shy away from politicized topics, like the topic of immigration. The new series, a spinoff of the hit series Sons of Anarchy, takes place in a fictional town on the border of California and Mexico, that puts it in an area that has been in the news as of late, with regard to the issue of immigration.
But while the series won’t shy away from such hot-button issues, cast member Antonio Jaramillo, who plays Michael ‘Riz’ Ariza, says the show has an opportunity to educate viewers while keeping them entertained, and, act to increase representation of the Latinx community on television.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Jaramillo discussed the idea of representation on TV and whether or not the subject of immigration will be addressed on Mayans. Jaramillo said.
“I think it will touch on certain subjects. First and foremost it is a TV show to entertain people. It will of course touch on certain subject matters that are sensitive to many people. That being the subject of immigration and being on the border. We're going to deal with that a lot… So hopefully the show won't only entertain people but teach them a little bit as well. I think it's an important show to have.
It's important that we have this show and I think it'll teach many people and it'll empower our communities as well to see a show like this with a cast of primarily Hispanic actors, which... they're around. People sometimes think 'Oh, my God there's only four or five. There's Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas.' People can only name two or three, but there's a lot, and there's not as many opportunities out there for us.”
It is good to hear that the series won’t shy away from addressing present-day political issues, and that it will be using its setting as a means to connect its characters and their circumstances to the real world. It will be interesting to see how creator Kurt Sutter and co-executive producer Elgin James plan to approach the subject, and how much it will impact the overall storyline of Ezekiel ‘EZ’ Reyes and his introduction into the chaotic world of MCs.
