The upcoming Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans M.C., may be missing Jax Teller and is focused on an entirely new club, but actor Antonio Jaramillo says the show will still be interested in disenfranchised groups creating a world for themselves. The series is set to premiere on FX next week, and it will tell the story of Ezekiel ‘EZ’ Reyes (J.D. Pardo), as he begins his journey with the Mayans Southern Cali charter, after his life takes an unexpected turn.
That point of view will be dramatically different from that of Charlie Hunnam’s Jax, who was basically born into SAMCRO and followed in the footsteps of his late father. But shifting from Jax to EZ also means the introduction of an entirely new cast of characters, including Jaramillo as Mayans secretary Michael ‘Riz’ Ariza.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Jaramillo said that Mayans would contain certain thematic similarities with its predecessor, in that it’s about characters who gravitate toward the MC life because they’re otherwise disconnected from the rest of the world. He also said the cast of primarily Hispanic actors would play an important part in the show creating a different kind of energy. Jaramillo said:
“This imaginary world that Kurt Sutter has created continues with Mayans M.C. This is another motorcycle club that evolved from the original Mayans club that started with Emilio Rivera and now we're looking at that story. We're looking at the backstories of these Mayans the same way viewers looked at Sons of Anarchy for seven seasons. It's similar in many ways because it's still a motorcycle club, it's still a bunch of guys who feel disconnected from society and they're trying to find their own way and to assimilate into the norms of this world, and the reason they're in a motorcycle club is because they've been disenfranchised and they create their own world so they can feel a part of something. It's going to be quite different as well because it's a different club. We have an almost entirely Hispanic cast, so that creates a different energy. I would say it will be a bit spicy, I guess. It's going to be cool.”
Mayans M.C. has a lot to live up to, as at one point Sons of Anarchy was FX’s highest rated show. That kind of success has certainly paved the way for this spinoff to not only take place, but to take these theme to some unexpected places.
